Diving in and doing my valve covers this weekend. help with checklist!

wanting to make sure i got my parts list in order as i won't be near a parts store to get anything i might have forgotten.

6th gen covers and gaskets
intake gasket
plugs
oil
pcv valve

anything else thats a must do? how about putting rtv on the gaskets? is that needed?

Why do you need oil?
Put RTV just on the corners.

Oil because I'm way past it needing changed. I've not done it due to it leaking. Might as well start fresh!

I assume you have a torque wrench? Otherwise add that to the list.

Definitely for that uim. Look up the order and torque specs in the fsm.

If you got the valve covers new it comes with the PCV already in it.

yup. friend helping me has one. he races his old *** miata around the atlanta area so he's my go-to guy for auto help!

also, are there any links i can bookmark for tips or tricks? i got the link of the guy who posted how to change the plugs. is pulling the cover the only other thing to do from that link?

Yes. Once you pull the upper manifold, all you have to do is remove the valve cover bolts (10 on each cover) and they come right off. Also, those bolts are torqued to INCH pounds not FOOT pounds, and they will snap very easily if you over tighten them.

I never use one for mine. pretty sure he was leaning towards for the VC covers since they're known to break very easily.

done. minus an emergency trip to advance auto*, it took about 2.5 hours with both of us working on it. butt loads of oil all over the back VC. the spark plug chamber nearest the driver was 90% full of oil.

* well the same chamber that was full of oil, when we pulled off the ignition coil it was so badly eaten up with oil that the top popped right off. almost shat my pants. THANK GOD that advance had some in stock which was a shock of all shocks.
