My washer stopped working. The fuse is fine as it also runs the wipers, so the fuse cannot be bad. I have to go check the pump for voltage and may have to replace it. I did a forum search and a few people vaguely say it is somewhere under the front passenger wheel well splash guard, but there are no specifics.

Has anyone worked on the pump and knows where it is? I've got 78k miles on my '03 GLE and that still sounds too low for the pump to die, but who knows.

Excuse my spelling of windshield, I missed a key.

I forgot to say I already looked in the FSM, the pump replacement is not documented. It is not there. See pages EL-166 and EL-167. There is no pictorial, no instructions, nothing.

RR5, thanks. The tubing layout doesn't tell much, but the U tube video shows everything. However, I think it is a lot of work to remove the front bumper cover and I probably would run into issues with the underside clips. It also helps to have a lift of course. I hope I can get at the pump with the bumper skin in place.

You can just remove the passenger side front bumper cover and pull it slightly out of the way to gain more access.

Thanks. I'll try that. I'll have to get extra clips for the wheel well and the
underside panel. I think the underside panel may have a few bolts too, which with my luck are rusted into their threading. I have broken off a few bolts on the underside before that were stuck.

I'm pretty sure the pump is attached to the bottom of the reservoir itself. It's not a big piece.

The U tube video shows the exact location on the bottom outer side of the reservoir. But you have to remove the bottom panels on the car and move the bumper skin on the passenger side to get at the damn thing.

Raise it up on jack stands and work from under the car. You do not need to take the front bumper cover off.

Thanks. I will try. We've got 94 degree weather in Boston for the last week with extremely high humidity and that is projected to continue for awhile.

I don't have a garage and am not to thrilled to work outside in that heat.

I had the same problem in my 4th gen. The pump wasn't actually bad, but it was clogged. There is an end cap on the pump that encloses the impeller. Took that off and cleaned it. Worked fine. However, I never could get that end cap to stay on, so I ended up replacing it. Just fyi.

I don't hear the pump motor make any noise when I actuate the wiper/wash function with the stalk. So it is likely that the pump is dead or there is a wiring problem, which I would hope not.

The autoparts place that made the U tube video was smoking _____
or drinking moonshine. There is no need to remove the bumper skin or even loosen any part of the skin.

Jack the front of the car up and place on jackstands. Go to the underside of the car at the far corner under the headlight and side marker. There will be a black plastic panel on the underside about 8 inches wide which is held in place by a phillips screw attached to the bumper skin under the side marker side on the right side, assuming your right is under the side maker. There is also a 10mm bolt on the left side. There is a fastener at the front to a hole in the bumper skin. Remove the phillips screw, 10mm bold and front fastener.

Pull the front of the panel out from underneath the front bumper skin and bend it backward so you can see underneath.

Underneath will be the washer reservoir with the pump attached on the side.

Make sure you are wearing protective goggles and take a plastic basin or something like it and place it under the pump and reservoir.

Grab the pump with your hand and gently pull horizontally out of the grommet on the reservoir. The pump is held in place by friction. It will then be hanging by its power cord and the rubber tubing that feeds the washer jets. Washer fluid will spray out once you pull the pump out of the grommet.

Let the washer fluid drain out.

Then depress the tab on the connector at the top of the pump and pull the connector out. Pull the rubber tubing out at the bottom.

Installation is the reverse.

You can probably reuse the fluid you just drained into the basin.

Turn the ignition on partway and test the washer.
