Nissan Air Bag Recall - update?
What is the latest with the air bag recall? The attached article mentions the 00-03 Maxima. Anyone receive any recall info from Nissan or have a dealership swap out the recalled parts?

I called Nissan North America in the beginning of April. The representatve stated that Nissan was in the process of investigating how many vehicles may be affected and coming up with a solution. In other words, it was too early for any answers! Two weeks later, I received the following E-mail with a case number:
"Thank you for taking the time to write Nissan North America Inc.
Please be informed that “Takata," a supplier, has reported to NHTSA a potential safety defect in the Front Passenger Air Bag Inflators in certain 2001-2003 Model Year Nissan vehicles sold in the U.S., and also vehicles of our competitors.
Nissan will be conducting a voluntary safety recall campaign to address an issue identified by Takata and replace the front passenger air bag inflator. Nissan plans to begin notifying customers in the near future.
Nissan is committed to a high level of customer safety, service and satisfaction and is working with its dealers to promptly address this issue. If you have any further questions or concerns, please call us directly at 1-800-647-7261."
Sincerely,
Nissan North America, Inc.
I plan on calling back because two months have passed. I know for a fact that the dealers and the technicians have NOT been told how to proceed with this at this point. Unfortunaely, the issue affects many cars worldwide and the oldest Maxima is now thirteen years old! I'll keep everyone posted.

Meanwhile, everyone that sits in your passenger seat is taking a risk with potential "shrapnel and flames in the passenger compartment". Might it be worth it to unplug the passenger air bag harness until this is resolved?

When I contacted Infiniti back in mid-April, I got this response back:
Thank you for contacting Infiniti and allowing us the opportunity to assist you.
A review of our records indicates that the above-referenced vehicle is not currently involved in any recalls or service campaigns.
In regards to the Takata recall, Infiniti will make a specific campaign announcement within the next 30 days. If your vehicle is affected, you will be notified. No campaign announcement has been made at this time.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please call us directly at 1-800-662-6200 (Option 7).
Sincerely,
Infiniti

The 2000 is not part of the recall. This is from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA)
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchVehicles
Report Receipt Date: APR 12, 2013
NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V136000
Component(s): AIR BAGS
Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
SUMMARY:
Nissan is recalling certain model year 2001-2003 Maxima, Pathfinder, and Infiniti I35; model year 2002-2003 Infiniti QX4; and model year 2003 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 and possibly certain Sentra vehicles to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. This recall addresses both the passenger side frontal air bags that were originally installed in the vehicles, as well as replacement air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts. A replacement air bag may have been installed, as one example, if a vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the passenger side frontal air bag.
CONSEQUENCE:
In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the passenger seat occupant or other occupants.
REMEDY:
Owners of all vehicles on which a defective air bag may have been installed either as original equipment, or as a replacement, will be notified. Dealers will inspect vehicles, and where a defective air bag inflator is identified, the inflator will be replaced, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided the agency with a notification schedule. Owners may contact Nissan Customer Service at 1-800-647-7261.
NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Well, I haven't received a letter fom Nissan, but I called my local stealership, and it turns out mine is included in the recall. I bought this '03 back in February, so Nissan probably mailed the letter to the previous owner thinking he/she still owns it.
I would recommend everyone to just call to find out if your Max is part of it.

ramriv777 has the best plan - call the dealer.

Your chances of anything bad happening are so slim that you're going to be killed driving to work several times over before an airbag malfunctions on you. It's not even worth reading about. I wouldn't even bother taking it in unless I was really bored.

Had the miss fortune of totaling my Max earlier this year and while I had no one sitting in the passenger seat, I will say that the passenger side airbag deployed without catching fire or shooting shrapnel... and as such, im not worried about it with my current Max.

Question on the 2000... I read the article on the NPR link (http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/...faulty-airbags) and it says that 2000 models are included in the recall. But above someone said it's not? Am I going to get a recall notice?

Just got my notice in the mail from Nissan yesterday. It says on the notice, "... in certain 2002 model year Nissan Maxima vehicles." Not sure if this excludes other years or not, they could of just wrote it specific to my car, who knows.

I got mine done last week. Dropped it off in the morning. By 10 am it was done. Picked it up in the afternoon. No fuzz, no drama. The best experience I've had with a stealership in years.

I called the dealership this week and had them check my VIN... Now I'm waiting for them to call back to schedule a day to have it replaced. With any luck, it will get rid of the SRS light that just came on... But probly not.
I recommend just calling the dealership and having them run your VIN as others have done, takes a few mins.
