Anyone's car catch on fire at 4:00am and burn to the ground while sitting in their driveway? Mine did.
The fire dept said it was electrical. They said it started in the trunk area.
My first thoughts were someone set my car on fire. I tried to put it out but it was hopeless. The fire was on the left rear and a small one on the front passenger fender.
My sunroof has been acting crazy lately, opening randomly. I was planning on removing the fuse this weekend.

It was a wire kit for an amp. Wire the size of your pinky. not sure on the fuse.
Odd thing is it was sitting in my driveway completely idle for at least 30 hours and nothing until 3:00 or 4:00am.

I have only ever had 1 of my 2 30A fuses on my amp blow and that was because I was an idiot and forgot to remove the negative. If they said it started in the trunk then I would guess this happened but I really dont see how a fire can escape a metal casing......unless of course you have a cheap amp

Wow that really sucks... sorry to hear about that.
Honestly, I don't think it was the aftermarket stereo. Every amp/sub i've ever added powered down when the radio was turned off. Unless you had the ability to turn on your stereo without the key, I don't think this would have caused it.
Either way, I hope your insurance company doesn't give you any crap and they give you a fair price for your car.

Does the fire dept have any reason to remove the gas cap? I noticed the gas cap was near the car but completely melted. So obviously it was still on the car when it burnt. They had a large crowbar that they used to open the hood and truck(none too gently), but the fuel door has only a small dent where it appears have been pried open.

As far as the fire department removing the gas cap, that's a good question. As hot as that fire looked, I doubt that a melted gas cap could have been twisted off easily, if at all. How far away from the car did you find it?

When you came out of the house, did you actually see fire coming from the gas cap area? The little plastic pin that keeps it locked isn't that strong, and it wouldn't take much to pry it open.

As far as the next post "removing it for ventilation purposes", seems like a bad idea. Gasoline vapors burn, not liquid. Seems like it would be inviting an explosion.
