Odometer numbers fading

Can anyone tell me what would cause this?

usually when characters on an LCD are failing, it's a poor solder connection on either the display pins to the PCB or on the driver chip. Remove the instrument cluster and inspect for cold solder joins (not as shiny as others, bubbling).
