bilateral front speaker issue

bilateral front speaker issue
I was wondering if you more intelligent folk could help me out with (yet another) audio issue...
I have a 2002 GLE that started having the known B(l)ose HUD ribbon problem a few years after I bought the car. In 2006 I replaced the HUD with an aftermarket stereo that still allowed me to use the steering wheel controls. All was right with the world (specifically, my sound) for a long while.
In the last year or so, I began to notice that the front right or left speakers would intermittently go quiet. The problem got progressively worse, so that now it is only rare that I get sound out of either front speaker. When sound does come, it usually sounds fine but occasionally the sound is weak and sounds "crackly". The speakers come on and off spontaneously as I drive. The rear speakers have no issues, as far as I am aware.
Any thoughts? Could it be that there is just a loose connection to the back of the stereo? I'm going on an 8 hr road trip tomorrow, and I can't imagine doing it without music!!
Thanks! BTW, I've had this car for more than 10 years now, and aside from the audio problems and routine maintenence, the car is as good as the day I bought it (although it's only got 50K miles on it).

I fixed the issue...
I took apart the dash, hoping there was a loose connection somewhere. Looks like the cheap wire connectors I had (originals from Nissan) had come off several of the wires. I guess the Houston and St. Louis summers were too much for the electrical tape that was holding them on. I replaced them all with real wire connectors that screw on- good as new.
Thanks.
