Code P0430 Need more advice

Okay so I read some about P0430 but still slightly confused. Some people say that the cat is bad and needs to be replaced. Others say the O2 sensor just needed to be replaced. How can you tell which it is? Is replacing the 02 sensor actually fixing the problem or just hiding it?

Also I was told there are more then one cat on this car, which one is this if i replace. I know you guys have most likely seen a lot about this code just a pain to weed through pages and pages and find out exactly who is right and wrong. Thanks

I've had P0430 for years and just live with it. I keep reading threads on it and based on what I've read there is a 98% chance that the problem is in the precat (by the radiator), 1% chance it's the O2 sensor, and 1% due to various other problems. If you have any other codes then fix those first and see if the P0430 goes away. Replacing the precat with an aftermarket part is not that expensive unless you live in California in which case you are stuck with OEM ($800 for part alone).

I think I found the part for 350 I just need it to pass inspection in 2 weeks. Just came on yesterday.

Any other advice?not sure how to get around fixing this, or if it could be something else.

I have the same code on my 2001 Maxima. It's the only code and after reading a lot I am still unsure what to do.

Well good to know I am not the only one confused. I honestly dont want to waste money replacing the 02 sensors for no reason if thats not the problem.

Mine comes and goes. Maybe it's my imagination but I notice that when I fill up with 10% ethanol fuel and clear the code it tends to not come back

Luckily, after I turn the CEL off my 2K will go 2 weeks before the P0430 comes back on. That's enough time to put a few miles on the car and get the smog check done. It always passes with flying colors (less than 10% of allowable limits).

Go and spend $350.00 then come back and read and understand Cabernet's & Sontakkes' post. There are 3 model years for your generation and I see nothing that describes it.

Just do the antifouler trick. I have obx headers with the antifoulers and with 3,000 miles, no cel.
