3M Hood and Headlight Protection

3M Hood and Headlight Protection
After reading all of the posts about protecting the paint on our Maximas, I have decided to get the 3M installed. The installer is wanting to do the headlights, too. It will cost about an extra 70 - 80 dollars. I'm inclined to have it done, but was interested in what any of you might think about this. I'm not sure how much new AE headlights would be, but this might be cheap (?) protection. I will appreciate any comments (I think).

Re: 3M Hood and Headlight Protection
Thanks for the response. It sounds like good protection. Think I'll go for it. When I get some more bucks, I'll probably do the bumper, also.

I had the ScotchCal installed on my 2K2. I didn't do the headlights, but I did do the fog lights. After the job was done, it seemed like the fog lights were a little more dim looking and also had a bit of a yellow tint (neither of which I had noticed before). I did the install when the car had under 2000 miles so it could just be that I started "looking" for it . . .
I highly recommend doing the hood and the bumper though . . .

When I asked the shop about the 3M protection, they said the hood piece would be an excellent investment. They did not say the headlight/fog light protection is worthwhile. It will not stop the lense from cracking. It might make a slight difference but the lady told me she would not make that sale pitch.

I've been using 3M rock guard for 3 years now on various vehicles. With my 2k2 SE, I only did the hood and actual glass lenses (i.e. fog-lamps). The Lexan headlamps are very strong and small pits can be polished out of Lexan, but not out of the film (which gets pitted and peppered looking after a year or two). I've found that the bumpers and mirrors on my '98 & '00 Nissans didn't chip as much as the paint over the metal hood. Small parking lot bumps and dings are also easier to repair/hide without the 3M film on the bumpers.
We took the film off the 98 Maxima last year and were pleasantly surprised to find that the Nissan paint (98 Maxima) stopped chipping after a couple of years. It was horrible when new and would chip if a fly landed on it.

I would recommend the headlight protection. If you get the stuff called Stongard there will be no yellow tinting or dimming of the light coming out of the headlight. They are extremely thick and I know of several cars that have them on with no problems at all. I actually helped install an entire Stongard kit a few weeks ago on an Accord and the headlight pieces were extremely easy to do, but it also helps if you have two people doing it. I would say spend the extra money now instead of having to buy new headlights later.
