2000 Manual Transmission fluid

2000 Manual Transmission fluid
My brother is doing a transmission fluid change on his 2000 Maxima with a 5 speed.
We're having trouble finding the drain plug, and all the guides on here either use the automatic transmission or a 6 speed.

is for a 6 speed, and the drain plug appears to be near the back of the transmission on the driver side.
On my brothers, there is something else in its place but it has a rubber cap and a wire leading up into the engine bay. The fill plugs also don't match up with the car here and the guide. In the guide, it's on the same side as the drain plug. However, on my brother's car it's on the front of the transmission almost directly underneath his injen intake.
Please help as we don't want to start undoing bolts and ruin something in the transmission!

The actual drain plug is near the back of the tranny next to a bracket for the shifter, you will see it when you are under the car and it will be on the passenger side of the tranny. If I remember correctly, you might have a hard time getting it out without loosen up the bracket.
The black plug with the wire attach is your neutral/reverse light switch. If you have a hard time getting to the drain in the back, you can try the "black plug/reverse switch" in the front, but be warn.....it is very brittle and might break if you are not careful with it and it is not cheap.
Do not loosen or remove anything else towards the front of the car
other than the fill. There are other bolts there that might look like drains but they are not. They contain a spring and ball bearing with gives you the detent pressure on the shifter. If you remove these bolts by accident, make sure you don't lose the spring or drop the ball bearing out.
As for the fill you are correct. it is towards the front of the car, you can see it and access it front top or bottom (remove the plastic intake pipe, about midway on the tranny).
As with anything that requires the removal of a bolt to fill, always make sure you are able to loosen up the fill bolt before taking out the drain. You don't want to find out you have a seized or stripped fill bolt after your drain bolt is out and all of your fluid is drained, you will turn a 30 minute job into a project.

It's recommended to change the manual transmission fluid every 30,000 miles or 24months which ever comes first.
Haynes manuals are only $25.00. I recommend you buy one. It's nice to have for assistance with maintenance.

make sure u use gl-4 and only that. don't get anything else that is possibly a mix or anything that says gl-5. theres a thread in this forum about manual transmission fluid and i guess people have leaned towards Amsoil then Redline. i used Amsoil and it shifts like butter. hope that helps

Also, if you do it this way, you can lose your reverse switch in the oil that comes out.
Finally, when you pull out the neutral switch the gear oil comes flying out - you need to have the container over near the wheel, not right under the neutral switch.

Capacity on your transmission is just under 5 quarts...fill to the bottom of the filler hole. Under normal operating conditions AMSOIL Synthetic Manual Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube last two times longer than conventional petroleum GL-4 gear oils.
