OE Muffler Internal Pictures

what i'm looking for is any pictures of a oe muffler cut open.what i'm upto is I found a supplier of SS muffler parts to build your own custom units.so to do that i would need to see how the oe unit is designed inside and hopefully build one so i can get rid of this darn Megan drone and once again enjoy driving the car.my plans are to build it oe style with a 2.5" in and dual 3" out and the way i see it the parts list they use for a basic example only comes to about $55 and plus I get the satisfaction of saying hey I built that(if it sounds good).

I remember seeing a thread on this once. I did some Google searching and that's how I came across it. The mufflers are a variable capacity design. At low rpm, the exhaust flows through one set of pipes, then at higher pressure, a flapper valve opens and it flows through both tailpipes. I'll see if I can find it...

Looks similar to how a turbo muffler looks inside, but turbo mufflers have larger internal tubes, usually only 3 and some sort of deflector to guide the exhaust flow into the next interior tube. Still, for an OEM design, it appears to have decent flow potential.

One key to getting rid of drone is to get any kind of muffler that isn't a 'straight through' design.

That Oem muffler is good up to 247 whp IIRC......My 1/4 mile 60 ft times have always been awesome with the OEM muffler, it appeared to outflow the capabilities of an INJEN Intake I once ran.....I laid down repeated 2.1 sec/60ft with an 4AT and 18" wheels....

Sorry not sure what that had to do with what I said...but the OEM is an example of what I was saying to get.

That actually looks interesting. Porsche's for a while now have used something very similar with their optional sport exhaust systems, mostly found on the 911's.

OP: The G35 Sedan muffler will mount with very little modification, it's stainless, has the Variable Valve, and is 2.5"

It also has some nice looking dual polished tips.

I have one in my basement but shipping would negate it for you I think.

I don't know how heavy the Maxima muffler is, but that G sedan muffler amazed me, I wouldn't be surprised if it's 50 lbs.

Yessir. I can't imagine that it's heavier than the Maxima muffler though.... if it is I'm sure it's not by much. Probably very close to the same muffler, the dimensions are quite close I think if not the same for the body.

I'll get the weight of one sometime this week when I swap out stock for my Cattman...I don't think it is 50lbs though, I know stock Headers, precats and y pipe and main cat weighed a total of about 55lbs give or take a pound vs Cattman Headers which on box says when shipped 30 lbs.....and Fastcat don't know the weight say 5lbs ....

Actually, that's the whole reason I have the muffler, I was supposed to do that for the G35driver guys.... I've been so swamped with work, switching jobs, christmas, etc, and now the new car that I haven't had time to do it! And now I don't work where there's a welder anymore so I can't weld it back together after hacking it apart.

Thanks for the HU, but none around here. If/when I get one I'll get a good one. All awaiting a new house with a garage, no where to use it really now anyways. It's too cold to weld outside and I obviously can't do it inside my house LOL

Ok so i have been researching a few options on this custom muffler build and need some input.so from a review i have 2 options on the case design.first is a single outer shell with internal baffling materal or a inner and outter shell with sound damping between the shells with inner baffle materal.so many damn choices after talking with the supplier but he did explain that the number of internal chambers and pass thu pipes determins output sound.

Wow I was really shocked, but the G muffler only weighs 22.5 lbs

Seemed much heavier..... guess that just shows how much I suck at judging weight!
