I've got a possible deal in the works already but I'll add those to my research list if that doesn't work out. Getting the car in the air tomorrow so I'll know a lot more then. Thanks!

A local Z guy I know has some Tein SS coils sitting in a box from his old Max. Apparently one of them has slight damage (thread issue) so I'm going to check them out. Could be a decent score.

Would trade it up for my 00 w/ 170k miles...what do you guys think? is that a good trade up or should I just roll the 00 till the wheels fall off??

also BTW whats the mileage on the new max man?

120k. Still just under the 15k/year average but it was well maintained. I don't need to put many miles on it thankfully so it should last a while!

Suspension is one of the first things that should be addressed on the maxima before any performance mods are throw in the mix. The second thing is the brakes.

With hindsight, I would agree that suspension mods > go-fast mods, although there's clearly a relationship between the two.

Regardless of everyone's opinion there, I'm reminded that the OP has a history with the 300Z... so he's pretty familiar with these considerations.

If you're talking about a safety perspective, that's backwards. Brakes are the first thing you should be upgrading if you want to go faster.
IMO the 5th gen brakes are insuffiecient for the STOCK 5.5 engine power, even the 5th gen power is pushing those breaks for any real hard driving.

Once again the voice of reason

Although, I had a 300ZX Turbo, and I'm not familiar with anything.....

Well I got the Max into the air today and checked things out. Overall it's in great shape for 120k. Other than a slight rear main seal leak and a power steering hose that needs to be replaced, the only major thing is the front/rear motor mounts. I'll knock those out next weekend. I also confirmed the shocks are original so those will go, likely to be replaced with coilovers.

Quick question since the stickies and such are a bit chaotic. Are there any reputable, trusted Maxima parts vendors you guys can recommend or should I just wade through the old posts and see who has a decent price?

Appreciate all the input!

Exhaust and suspension parts. Call him. Don't use his website (old). Best quality exhausts for our cars, hands down.

NWP Engineering
Phenolic intake spacers and engine brace. Awesome guy.

CourtesyParts.com
Great online database, and pretty good prices for OEM parts

SouthPoint Nissan
Dave B. gives the best prices for OEM parts, bar none.

Rock Auto
Huge selection, good prices and good rep.

CustomMaxima.com
BWA HA HA HA HA!!! Drop-ship slight-of-hand. AWOL customer service. Junk products. Caveat emptor.

The good thing is, it's not a 300ZX so you won't NEED them on speed dial. Just your address book should suffice

Ah yes, I remember! I don't think you were a heavy poster but being one of the few with a special character in your name sticks out

Nissan's are the way to go. They have won me over for realiablity.

Yea, houses cost alot! I sold my Z in April of 04. Had a 3 series for a few years after that, and then ended up with the Infinti. Great Car!

And mods are way cheaper.

Nice find by the way! $4500 is a great deal. Looks clean. I actually found a 02 Jeep Cherokee Limited blk/blk with 72k for $5500 on Craigslist back in September. Its a great truck, and a steal at $5500.

You weren't kidding! Did my first "mod" today which was a set of those $88 '01 tails off Ebay that others recommended in another thread. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the quality/shipping was. They even included the tar roll to seal it. I wouldn't have had the ***** to order them without the assurances given here

So if anyone needs a set of good condition '02 tails, shoot me a PM. Otherwise they'll go into Classifieds soon. Anyway, here's a quick before/after shot.

Before

After

That looks real good on merlot.

Merlot is one of those colors that can pull off any of the lenses: black, clear, red.

No doubt! I spent a lot of time debating on the all red versus the black because I think both would look great. Heck, even the chrome looked good but I'm just a fan of a more muted/darker look, which is why I'm going to black out the front grill too.

Yeah Merlot can pull of anything except the silver grill. Everything else just looks good on it!

Nice work so far OP, I'm looking very forward to some more mods from you, seems like you've got the right plan of attack so far, and definitely some modding wisdom under your cap.

You know what I think is amazing? You took what look like two identical photos; one with the clear tails, and one with the black tails. But if you look again, it's obvious that the car moved to another similar parking spot.

And yet, the exact same height, distance and frame in the shot. Granted, it's eye-height, but still... impressive.

What's even stranger is that I was just noticing that myself and when I refreshed the page, you said the same thing Even the reflections of the parking lines in the paint match nearly perfectly. Total coincidence being a few days apart!

Not sure how well sandstone metallic (or whatever my color is called) pulls it off. Looked great on my grey lustre 5.5.

You should know your own car color.

As a general association, clear tails work with the lighter colors, and the various silvers; (Pearl White, Sterling Mist, Sheer Silver, Sunlit Sand, Polished Titanium). The black tails work with the darker colors; (Super Black, Majestic Blue, Mahogany Pearl, Grey Lustre). And the reds work with the richer colors; (Mahogany Pearl & Merlot, Pearl White).

It's unfortunate that Nissan applied tail-light lenses based on the model and year, instead of offering the consumer an option to color-match.

The Mahogany Pearl (5.0) & Merlot (5.5) colors have cross-over appeal.
