PLEASE HELP, CLUNKING NOISE OVER BUMPS!

Hey Everyone,

I am hoping someone can help me here. My front passenger end is making a clunking noise over bumps. I am lowered on BC Racing Coilovers. The car just sits on top of the stock 225/50/17 tires if your wondering how low it is. I wouldnt say it is slammed. Maybe a tad lower than S-techs??

I changed out both front axles in June. I JUST changed the entire front passenger control arm. It came with new balljoints, bushings, etc. I also changed the outer tie rod and the sway bar links. It took me dam near 6 hrs just for one side because it is so dam rusted down there. It seems like the longer I drive it, is when the noise starts coming. I figured it was the ball joint grease warming up and as it did, the joint wouldnt be as well lubricated and thus the noise. But its STILL doing it. It sounds SLIGHTLY duller than before but its still there.

Can it be that im TOO LOW? I mean im not nearly as slammed as some of the people on here. Could it be the "Inner Tie Rod"? Wheel Bearing? Could it be the Coilover? I dont think its the axle again. I am leaning towards the inner tie, what does that sound like? I just invested so much time into fixing this and I still have a problem. It would be great if you guys can give your insight. Thanks

Regards,
Kelvin

Just looked at the mount. It looks ok i guess? Its not leaking any grease or anything? what do u look for in bad motor mounts? and I dont think its tire rub and the coilovers are 3.5months old.

Thanks for the input, keep em coming please!

i can almost guarantee you its that mount. It is notorious for making that sound even when the mount looks fine. Is there anybody nearby that you know who has an NWP torque mount? If you put one on and lock it down, if the clunking stops then it is the fault of your mount

if it was tire rub it wouldnt be a clunking noise

Not to be an ***, but my car clunked all the time. Everytime I fixed one, another one would show up.

I had taken it to the mechanic 3 times and he would verify that it was clunking, but could never figure out what it was. He just assured me the suspension was in good working order

Check out posts on ebay engine mounts. Lots of pics and ways to check your mount if busted.

Fixed an annoying and elusive clunk on my dads 2000 with some new sway bar bushings (where they attach to the frame) the sway bar was moving up and down kissing something near/on the firewall or back of the engine.

New bushings, no noise.

I had the same problem as you where I had a clunking sound which sounded like a blown strut. My mount looked perfectly fine from the outside but that turned out to be problem. I recently bought BC coilovers and I installed ES LCA bushings and the sound still existed. I bit the bullet and bought a mount for $60 bucks and put it in myself and the sound went away.

Other than a mount, I would definitely check (and I get knocked for this sometimes) your hood latch.

Noticed my hood slightly 'jumping'. Saw it was rusted so I WD40ed it, and wrapped the hook (that connects to the latch) with electrical tape. I don't know it worked for me, couldn't hurt to check I suppose...

The same thing happened in my 3rd generation maxima. Fixed the mounts and no more clunk. Since you have tightened your suspension you will notice a few more noises.

its the mount if you wanted to check it here's what i did: put my left hand on the bolt area of the mount then with my right (or a friend could help here) push down multiple times on the top of the manifold (for 3.0 max I pushed on the black part of the engine that doesn't get hot) to simulate the car going over bumps. if you feel a thump or clunk then 100% its your mounts.

Why not adjust the latch and bump stops - do it correctly? Electrical tape?

Thats what i thought - mounts should be making some noise when starting the car - if bad, but there is silence in mine.

I took a look at the mount yesterday and it looks fine, I tried to push down on the manifold just to verify that mount is making noise but to no avail - silence again.
Then i pushed on the driver side fender couple time - and boom - clunking again.
It seems that the noises are coming from somewhere around the firewall, very close to the wheel.

The biggest mystery for me is that when i changed my suspension, the noises went away for about 4 days...hence why i thought that the issue might be with ball joints, tie rods or sway bar bushings...

Correct me if i`m wrong, but there are 4 mounts in our cars, but is there one by the firewall?

Anyway i will be taking "closer" look at it this weekend.

yeah...the rear mount, i'd say this is the most common mount to fail. Have you replaced sway bar end links and bushings?

Well, no but
I was going to put an order to jegs.com but noticed that there are two sets
Energy Suspension #355-7-3118R going for 69.99
Energy Suspension #355-7-3118G going for 49.99

Somebody knows what is the difference btw those sets?

Plus i`m thinking about adding the mount to the order, but just want to be sure

Yep, my 02 GLE was making a knock/clunk when driving over speed bumps too. It was the inner tie rod. It's not that hard to replace but you'll need a special tool to get it off. I picked up one at Harbor Freight for about $35 with a coupon. You could probably rent one too.
