Scraping/Grinding sound when making turns

Recently I've been getting a metallic scraping/grinding noise when I make sharp right or left turns at low speed.

What could be the cause of this?

Edit: stock everything (wheels suspension, etc)

Have you checked your brakes? They could be on the wear indicator. Mine was making a similar noise when turning right when the front left pads were on the inidicators.

It's your dust shields. I'd bet you $100 (of Monopoly money).

There's very little space between the rotors and the shields. Introduce a little rust, and scrape scrape scrape.

Get under the car with a small screwdriver and bend them away from the rotors a little.

also check the bump stops, they should have plastic caps on them, if they are missing and you turn and hit a bump at same time they make a horrible sound

You know, the weird part is ... I have 2 Maximas (95 & 03), and have gone through 2 MAF’s (1 ea) in a combined 234k. For the 4th gen, I bought one from www.car-part.com for 35$ shipped. Been on for nearly 50k. The piece for the 03 was from an old time ver member, it was from an 01 and I bought it used again for 55$.

So...yeah.

Yeah, not a MAF rider...

I remember people used to 'adjust' them and that would allow a slightly better turning radius. But then the rotors would be more prone to getting tangled up somehow..

Thanks for the links!

Located on the knuckle there is a bolt protruding horizontaly towards the control arm.

Without having your car on jacks, get underneeth look near the ball joint (juste a bit higher and towards the back of the car.)

I have this same noise when i make a full locked left turn. The noises happen when I make a full locked left turn at low speed, scrapeeeeeeeee (drive like 3-4 feet) scrapeeeeeeeeeee, (drive 3-4 feet) and again.

Also, if the car is not moving, right before the steering wheel locks all the way to the left (like right before it tightens up and cant turn any more) you hear this metal on metal scraping noise. I literally lock it, loosen, lock it, loosen, lock it and hear it.

Has anyone else had this lately?? I am having it now..from the left wheel with hard left turn. Makes a clanging sound , which I reproduced by hitting the thin metal shield on over the rotor.

Problem is, I bent the shield away from the rotor and at first the sound went away but now has come back. I can reach the front of the sheild but not the back end of the sheild from under the car...does any one know where the shield makes contact with the rotor when this sound happens????? I need to figure out why and where this is happening!

Thanks!

On another note, you may want to try jacking up the front end, removing the tire and have someone turn the wheel while you have a good look at what's going on. Of course it's possible it only happens with weight on the front but at least it's a place to start.
