02 maxima:If you shift a 4speed auto, would the tranny break?

I was wondering, I have a 4 speed auto, If you are driving about 40mph and drop it to D2, would it screw up the transmission?

Totally.

Shouldn't hurt much...a little clutch action.

If you rev match not so much, If you just dump it yea you may take some life out of it.

Edit: 40 is fine I forgot how tall 2nd is. You're good all the way up to 60.

Try doing in under 35mph what way ur revs match and you dont fell the trans catching hard. If u dump it into 1 at 40mph ur so ****ed so watch out!

u guys are crazy! out of the 5 max's i've owned, 2 were auto's (a 94 SE and a 96 SE) and i used to manual shift the heck out of the RE4F02A all the time for over 70k + miles. never had a problem.
granted i used to maintain the tranny (external tranny cooler, frequent tranny flushes) , but nonetheless. i don't think the newer automatics are weaker than it's predecessor.
heck, Aaron92SE is the guy who suggested manual shifting my auto way back when.

well my max is an manual, but my work car (chevy hhr) is an automatic. Going down big hills i pull it down into lower gears to help it slow down and i have never had a problem with the trans. I mean the option is there on the shifter for a reason, i just wouldn't abuse it. The computer is programmed to give you the most power/torque with the position of the throttle.

...you can shift into 1st at 100mph if you want and it wont be a problem. The TCM refuses to shift into conditions that it doesnt agree with. this is also the reason that if you extend your rev limiter the TCM will have you shift at the same RPM as before. the computer knows whats up and wont let you overrev.

Nissan gave us a gated shifter, so that tends to mean they understand that someone who buys a 222-255 hp sedan is probably someone who would at times like control over exactly when the transmission shifts-like holding it in a certain gear around a curve. The only real problem you can have with manually shifting an automatic is if you regularly downshift into 1st gear without simultaneously given it some gas, it can be hard on the clutch packs if you simply downshift into 1st gear, especially from higher speeds.

This is from my 4th gen, but they actually have similar gearing, actually nearly identical.

Top of 2nd w/ raised rev limit

i manually shift my auto 80% of the time. i regret not getting a manual. when i downshift i rev the engine a bit like you would in a manual to rev match and it does help from getting that trans thud from downshifting. it def feels better getting on the hiway in second and shifting into 3rd at 60 and so on. if i dont the car shifts to quick and feels sluggish. one thing i dont like but in an auto you cant fix without a shift kit is say you shift to 3rd and your in the gas hard the tranny will shift when it wants not always when you tell it to

It's obvious from my post that is incorrect.

Are you really willing to play Risk with your transmission? They are some finicky creatures.

It wont do it, shat, I try it at 70 and no thank it says, I'll wait until I get to a reasonable/safe speed. It's in the owners manual.

All i can say is that i shifted the heck out of my auto trying to show off and be cool. Till one day i got the gears stuck. It wouldn't drive past 40 mph and it took a while to even get to 40! I couldn't even reverse. So sad, but live and learn. It was a nice $1500 bucks spent on a new tranny. Could have used that cash for something else on the max.

I have two auto '00s (91k and 110k) and I manual shift when it makes sense. It's pretty easy to tell when it's ok to vs when it's not. Most often, I downshift into second out of non-OD [D] when coming down a steep hill, at about 45-35mph. It does so in a smooth fashion in both cars, and helps to not stress the brakes too much. I also manual shift on highway off and on ramps when it makes sense. ... so from my standpoint it's ok.
