Catalytic Convertor Replacement
CEL came on... sure enough the Catalytic Convertor. What have you guys seen for prices and installation on these? I was just quoted $1,000 for parts and labor, which I think is high.
Who else has had a replacement? What is your mileage? I am at 92k in an '01, but am in MA.

I'm assuming at that price it is one or both precats that need replacing. Check the classifieds, you might find someone who installed headers is selling their precats, that's how I got mine.

The P0420 could be fixed with a simple ECU flash from the dealer. There was an update "firmware", if you will, that sometimes fixes that P0420 problem. Also, have you replaced the O2 sensors before and after that cat? If those are bad, they could be causing your cat to read below efficiency. Do a search just for "P0420" and there will be a plethora of threads about that code.
Just a couple thoughts before you take the plunge on an expensive catalytic converter.
I have been getting the P0430 code on my 01 SE since I bought it. I have 101k on it (bought it with 84k on it and it was throwing the code then). Just bought a Bank 2 pre-cat from Eastern online for $163. Hopefully that fixes my problem.

Thanks for the input all. I appreciate it. I will do some searches on p0420 to get some more information.
I don't have the inspection until October, so I have some time to make the final move. I bought the car last fall and have only put on about 2,000 miles. Not sure if the O2 sensors have been replaced at all. I am open to that option with trying it out. Any good sources you guys suggest?
Side question, if anyone is aware... will the '01 O2 sensors fit a 4th gen '98? My brother has my old one (now at 210k) with shot o2 sensors.
Does someone mind clarifying p0420 as front or rear? The statements have all been a little mixed on it. I believe it is Bank 1 - rear?
Dustey - what does the dealership charge for the update?
Thanks again all.

Bank 1 - Rear or Right Bank, closest to the firewall
Bank 2 - Front or Left Bank, closest to the radiator
Sensor 1 - Primary - Before/upstream of the pre-cat
Sensor 2 - Secondary - After/downstream of the pre-cat
For Bosch Oxygen Sensors, here are the part numbers and their corresponding locations:
Bank 1, Sensor 1: 13350
Bank 1, Sensor 2: 13375
Bank 2, Sensor 1: 15955
Bank 2, Sensor 2: 13348
-- This is for 2000 Cali Spec and All 2001-2003 (According to the diagram I found from another O2 sensor thread on this site)
For O2 sensors... Try RockAuto.com or eBay.
For the flash, I know a tech at Nissan who did it for free, but I believe if you walked in off the street, it would range from $50-$100.
As far as Nissan OEM vs Aftermarket, I would think they should operate (and test) identical. I don't see a reason why you should spend $800 on the Nissan part when there are other vendors out there who make the identical part for MUCH cheaper. But, it's your decision. I don't have emission testing here.

Look in the classifieds for used ones first, be a lot cheaper. Or if you want new, go aftermarket and have a muffler shop do the install. You'll save a lot over the dealer.

What is weird is I got this code after putting in a new main cat. I have now the whole cattman system. I do have an exhaust leak at the resonator on the b-pipe but thats after all the o2 sensors.
