How-to 5.5 Emergency Sunroof close
Well it was bound to happen- fargin sunroof decided not to close. Not only that but doing the "Learning override" resulted in just clicks in the electronics. I wasn't able to find anything on closing it the dirty way so here ya go.
Step 1.
Open the sunglass bin and grab a phillips head screwdriver. Remove the screws in there:
Step 2.
Pull down on the right side of the console next to the passenger side map light. No you don't have to remove the map light lenses, I did that because I was trying to find the retaining screws.
Step 3.
You will be face to face with the sunroof motor now. Before you pull it down tap on the motor itself (The metal bell) and try closing your sunroof. Like all electric motors they sometimes get "stuck". If that doesn't work go to step 4.
Step 4.
Remove the two large screws that mount the motor/gearbox to the car. Be careful with these screws they have locktite on them and you can strip the heads on removal.
Step 5.
Once they are out pull down on the motor until it disengages. Once it's disengaged you should be able to pull on the sunroof and get it mostly closed. Since you have the motor disengaged, go ahead and try bumping the sunroof vent switch. If the motor is working the way it's supposed to you will see it jump. If that happens then try re-engaging it on the gears and bump the sunroof fully closed. If it can't you will have little other choice than to force it shut by pushing on the triangle shaped pieces that control the pitch of the sunroof.
Step 6.
Put everything back together and start reading up on how to fix the fargin sunroof.
How to install a replacement assembly
and here's a thread that has the factory diagnostic procedure

i never open mine i hate how it looks when its open with out that wind deflector visor thing. so i just tilt it up and thats it. so not planning on having to do that but good to know. older model cars had a nut on the motor or near it that if u got a socket and turned it u can use it manualy to open and close sunroof my old 85 bmw had that option even came with the actual tool to do that so that was a plus!

Excellent write up, I always wondered how to manually close the sunroof on these cars. Mine is all messed up sometimes it opens by itself and then sometimes the switch just doesnt work, you have to keep messing with the switch and then it will work. Im sure ill have to put this thread to good use in the near future.

Great write-up and pics!
I've never understood why other manufacturers (like Nissan) don't provide for emergency manual operation of the sunroof, like my old VW does. In my VW, you pop-open the sunroof controls (just like in the Nissan) and, inside, is a crank tool that you fit into the mechanism to hand-crank the sunroof closed. I guess it's a German thing.

Same Problem
Thanks for the great write-up. I tried to open my sunroof the other day and it would not open. I assumed I had blown a fuse, but didn't think much of it since it's still fairly cold out. Yesterday I was driving home from work when the roof started going crazy. First it tilted up and down and then fully retracted. The switch sounded like it was clicking like it had a short. Once the roof was fully open, the switches stopped working and I could not close it.
I found some other posts that mentioned disconnecting the battery terminal to reset the switch, this didn't work. I followed the instructions above and got the roof 90% closed. It is still tilted down in the back and lets air through. I tried holding the close button which was mentioned in another thread to reset things. No luck.
It's gonna rain in a day or so...any thoughts on how to close the roof and how to get the switches working?? The car was in the shop about a month ago for some front end work, so it's possible the battery was disconnected. This is a 2000 maxima. Thanks for any help.
