Something tells me it's the thing more commonly referred to as the "trunk liner." But I could be wrong.

It's the Plastic piece that the license plate is affixed to. It looks like an insert part that can be removed relatively easy. Part # 84810M (Courtesy Nissan)I have tried to remove it "gently" but I was afraid to break any clips that were holding it on. If anyone has pic of how to remove it...then let me know.
Thanks,

Oh. Well that blows my "trunk liner" assumption.

As far as those clips go, unless you can access them from the inside of the trunk, I don't know if they readily come out. Those sort of look like one of those dime-a-dozen parts (e.g. door panel clips, etc.) that just kind of have a fifty-fifty chance of breaking when you take them out, and then you replace them with new ones if broken...

Can I ask why you need to remove them? I don't think I've ever seen anyone undertake this before...

I want to repaint it. Mine is faded at the bottom. I think I am just going to muscle it off. If I break the clips, then I should be able to replace them easily like you said.

Thanks for the comments.

Actually, if you're repainting, why not try the taping off option first? Or just paint over them? You could scrape the paint off later, or just leave them painted. I mean...they are under the license plate, right? Nobody's going to see them.

It's not covered by the license plate. It's more like the actual box that the license plate sits in. The entire piece has the license plate lights in it too. I might tape it off instead of removing it like you said. Simply because of the ***-pain it is going to be to remove it.

Oh that piece. I thought you meant the two little pieces you screw into. Yeah, taping definitely looks like the best option for you then.

Right... I think I am going to just mask it off and paint it. Just look for me squatting behind my Max prepping it for paint.
