You need to remove the radio with it unfortunately. Open the ashtray there's a screw in it you take it out and then you pry up the plastic that surrounds the transmission controls. Then you gotta remove the vents. After that is done u gotta remove the 4 screws that hold the bracket that holds the radio and climate control. Then go on from there

yup its a huge pita but when u go to remove the radio and control from the metal bracket ur guna wana take a hammer (not kidding) and the best fit screwdriver and give it a few decent wacks and it will free up these screws. they are extremely tight so be carefull with these, ive done at least 3 installs and did the same method with perfect results everytime after stripping out 2 of the screws on mine. it's not hard at all on my 2000 i would think it is exactly the same on the 02-03
asma123 is right on top of it, here is a little more detail
First there is a screw in back of the coin tray that you have to take out then you can un-unclip the gear shift surround area. (by unclip i mean give it a good pull and it will pop right out)
There are two gold colored screws down behind that, that hold the metal bracket that holds the radio and climate control in place. Unscrew those.
Now pull real hard on the upper air vents right above the radio/climate control area. This pops out too but isn't real easy to grip. I pull on the lower edge but do not pull on the fins. FSM says to use a screwdriver padded by a towel and work your way around but i just pulled real hard.
Once you get this off there are two more gold screws that hold the upper part of the metal bracket.
Once you get those off you can slide the whole thing out and access the 4 screws on the sides that hold the climate control in there.
It's probably about a 15-20 minute job the first time around

Be careful with your radio while you are at it. The service manual suggested disconnecting the battery cable which I probably should have done. While trying to get the vent out I kept hitting the radio buttons. I don't feel like I banged the radio too much but now I can't use the CD changer anymore - I keep getting the CD F0 error (or whatever the error message is).

these are instructions (with pics!) to remove the radio but it's pretty much the same with the climate control.
