I wont even mention the Tein SS b/c he said his budget is $900. So you should check out BC's or nex SS/GT (around $700-800) coilovers. I took a ride in a car with the Nex setup and the ride wasnt bad. I just dont know how long they will last ya.

I haven't had experience with any Megan coilovers. So Far just K-sport, D2's and my Tein SS's. K-sports had to be repaired to many times for it to be worth it.
IF you want anything around $900, go with what Pbn85 said. The BC's are a very close second seeing as a few Maxima owners around here own them and the ride isn't bad at all. They work relatively well with our cars.

I heard you shouldn't use the pillow mounts with the tein setup. Can anyone tell me why? Or is this something to ignore? For those of you running the teins how did you deal with it? New mounts or did you use the pillows?

bump on this question
If you didn't use the Tein pillow mounts, what do you use... the OEM mounts?

John, the teins dont come with mounts so you have to use OEM mounts. Its one of the few coilover setups that reuse stock components but I think the reason why the teins are comfortable is because of the use of the OEM mounts. I know Tein sells optional pillowball mounts if you want to buy it seperately but they do not come with the coilovers.

Tein's marketing:
"Pillowball upper mounts are designed to offer greater feed back by eliminating the deflection in OEM rubber bushings."
I don't know about you guys, but "greater feedback" and "eliminating rubber" sounds like a recipe for a bone-jarring ride.
PBN85 -- so I take it you're not using the pillowball mounts?

It sure doesn't read like anything I'd want for my daily driver, however.
I've been asking lots of people lately about going coilover. Many, many different opinions. However, I will say the opinions are all based on the cost/value proposition of putting coilovers on my seven year old, 4-door sedan, and not about ride. Regarding ride, the overall opinion is that coilovers offer the vastly superior performance ride.
I've got all Winter to beat myself up about this one. I'm sure to flip-flop numerous times

I just had an interesting talk with my street-pro mechanic. He loves coilover upgrades, and has high praise for the Tein SS in terms of handling performance. But that's not the advice he gave me about the Max.
"I'd love to install them, but don't do it to your family 4-door."
His reasoning: I'm not a young man anymore, and what may have been acceptable for me 25 years ago, I might grow to hate today.
I appreciate his honest opinions, but man, that was brutal! Ouch.
flip-flop

Anyone know if their is a weight savings between a coilover setup vs shock/springs?
I am thinking of Teins also. I don't know how old you are Rochester, I'm no spring chicken myself (42 y.o.). I figure if can survive my brutal Maxspeed/stock spring combo, I am sure I could survive Teins. Sounds like it will be a nice upgrade in every way.

That's a reasonable question. I'm guessing the weight diff is minimal, with the win to the coilovers, but I don't know. Shouldn't be too difficult to figure out if you poke at it for a while.
If you're satisfied with your current aftermarket strut/spring setup, the Teins would probably work for you, too. Better, maybe. They might work for me, too... that was just my mechanic's opinion. Man, I would kill for a chance to ride in a 5.5 gen 6MT with Tein SS coilovers, so I could know for sure!
I'm 45, Mr. Chicken. However, my wife thinks I'm very immature, so that should knock a few years off, eh?

hey Sir, if you want you could take a ride in my car. I have the tein SS coilovers and they are VERY comfortable...stock-like, I kid you not. If you ever make it to NY I'd be glad to take you for a spin.
Also, the coilovers are much lighter than the spring strut setup and its so much easier to work with them as well.

I suggest if $800 is your budget save up a few months or several more months and get something with good repour. Tein SS is your best bet by the reviews and people who actually have had experiences on here with them. My .02

Thanks for the info and offer. I may take you up on that. I am all over NYC for work all the time.
