I already searched and the battery disconnect trick does not work.

When I move the slider switch every position but the closing position makes a click (from the electric connection I assume). When I push the tilt up button it also makes the click sound. When I push the tilt down button it makes no noise.

When I opened it last, it went back smoothly. I tried a new switch from Nissan and it still had the same problem. All fuses are in tact.

Any ideas on how to fix it?

Turn the car on and keep pressing and holding the tilt up button. Eventually it'll start moving little by little until it's closed. When it's flush with the roof, hold the tilt closed button until you hear a click. At this point it should resume its regular controls.

The same thing happened to me when I disconnected the battery with the sunroof open...it doesn't like that.

This happened to me last week when I disconnected the battery with the sunroof open. What I eventually ended up doing was pulled it closed as my buddy tinkered with the switch. I dont know how it worked honestly but little by little I was able to pull it and then it worked. Give it a shot.

oh yea I had this problem last week when I had my system installed.

You have to push open tilt, then close and hold it for 5-10 seconds. It has to relearn the switch its really stupid.

If that doesnt work try tilting open or close holding it down for that time period. Its finicky but it will work.

you use the tilt to shut it. just keep clicking the tilt.

The tilt method does not work no matter how long I hold it, I already have tried the resetting method. I tried pulling it while holding the tilt also, that did not work. The previous time it got stuck I got it to close by pulling it but it took a lot of muscle just to move it a few inches per interval.

I've already taken off the roof liner and noticed some copper pipes welded to something. Is taking off the entire assembly more than just nuts and bolts?

if you've taken off the roof liner, then you can close it. Look at the motor and there will be a bolt that you can turn. This will turn the motor manually, closing the roof. It sounds like you have something electrical wrong with it if the tilt button isn't working. Check your relay/fuse, use a multimeter to check if you're getting power to the switch and the motor, etc. At least you'll be able to get it closed for now...

I was feeling all around the motor and couldn't find the bolt I'm supposed to turn. Where is it?

There should be a bolt/screw on the motor itself. If you turn it, it will spin the motor causing the entire assembly to slide.

There isn't one. The only thing I can think of is taking the grey metal cover off the right side of the motor to see if there's anything to turn there.

I'll try to check tomorrow, but I'm 99% sure there's some kind of allen key thing you can turn on the motor; I saw it once when I removed the panel covering it.

According to a Nissan technician (from justask.com), the 2001 maxima can't be closed manually. Must be the same for 2002 after looking at the sunroof motor.

I just fixed my sunroof. It seems the glass was not sliding as smooth as it was suppposed to. Tested the motor by itself and it was functioning in both directions. I cleaned the tracks and lubed them with lithium lube. Taking everything out wasn't as difficult as I expected but very tidious. Everything was done with a screwdriver 10mm and 14mm. I'll post up pics in a bit.

This is the whole sunroof assembly after removing all the 10mm nuts and bolts.

This is how the roof liner came out without having to take out seats. I made no creases in the liner this way; I actually put it back in the opposite direction and it takes some wiggling. The front passenger seat was pushed forward and tilted forward.

This is the sunroof motor disassembled and for some reason it has deep gashes down the side and I'm not sure why.

I forgot to mention I lubed the "fuzzy" cables all the way through with lithium grease by sliding the glass and greasing the cables where the motor would go. Once the motor is out, the glass should be able to slide relatively easy.

Before putting everything back together, I tested the system and everything was working properly. The only problem is that I will not be using the sunroof anytime soon because the worst of it was holding it up to bolt it back in by myself and using the seats to help hold it all up.

Question, Did you have to remove all 4 pillar covers to get the liner out?
My sunshade is off-the-track, and it looks like the liner will have to come out to fix it.

Yes. Remove the 4 plastic covers on the corners but I also removed the one on the seat belts with a 14mm after taking off the smaller cover over the part of the seat belt that slides up and down.
