2003 off to a rough start

Well Friday night I go to move my car, and to my surprise it won't start. Turn the key and turn the key but nothing. It sounds like it wants to start but just won't turn over. After numerous unsuccessful attempts I called my partner and we pushed it into the driveway. I tried it again the next morning and it started and cut off but then started right back up. I took off the battery terminal and let the car sit for a couple of days. Today I started the car and it ran but after starting it the RPM's shoot to about 13000 then drop to about 5000 where it feels like its going to cut off then balances out. I was thinking to swap the fuel filter but no one sells it. The auto part stores are saying that it's a non serviceable item and I know that many here have changed theirs, not even sure if that is the problem. Could someone give me somes ideas as to what this might be. Would hate to take it to the stealership or mechanic if it's something simple.

I was unsuccessful in finding the fuel filter. Local boys (Strauss, Autozone, Advanced) are saying they don't sell the filter it's listed as (N/S) non-serviceable. So where do I buy it? Autozone says I would need to replace the entire pump since the filter sits inside of the pump. Excuse my Noobie-ism but not certain what the MAF and coil pack is. Appreciate the help.

MAF is mass-air flow sensor-black plastic piece about 2 inches long inline after airbox with plug into it. (these go bad often and cause rough running/startup among other issues)
coilpacks-theres one per sparkplug-since theres not distributor-and they fail often(tho your symptoms dont really sound like coils)

search is your friend

MAF will be an easy swap...should take less than 10 minutes. If you want a good price, call DaveB to get a fuel filter if you think that's the problem.

Awesome write up, I'm gonna do this soon. I never believed the "lifetime fuel filter" BS either.
