I got mine for $153 at Autozone.
It looked exactly like the one that came out of my car and came with a life time warranty.
(I guess we'll see how long that "life time" really is.)

Yesterday: Check Engine = Bad Alternator

I did call other places and prices ranged from $185 Pep Boys to $400 local independent.

I had mine go out about 10months ago and replaced it with an AutoZone re-manufactured alternator (154$).
That lasted about 1 month until that one gave out, but I had it replaced under their warranty, and its been great ever since.
Have them bench test it before you walk out the door to make sure you don't put an already crappy part in.
And while it may not last as long as an OEM alternator, the lifetime warranty is what got me to buy it, after doing it twice I can get it done in about 30minutes, and I have free towing from AAA, so its not a big deal if it does go out again.

Are there any good auto shops in your area that specialize in alternator replacement/refurbishment?

After an extensive search recently, I couldn't find anybody that could beat their price except some folks on ebay.

Autozone would be my last resort personally for any electrical part. I've been through 4 in one day on my last car and said never again. However, I did buy a distributor there over 4 years ago and it's been perfect ever since so it's hit and miss.

I'd say if it's something you could handle replacing again w/o going crazy, it might be ok.
Regardless of where you buy it, just make sure it has a lifetime warranty.

Thanx guys. I think he is still on the look, like y'all he is kinda skiddy on autozone stuff as well, although they provide lifetime.

i buy mine from consumer auto parts or barrco. sometimes i end up returning for another one, other times its fine. kinda a gamble with these rebuilt models, but def. cheaper than new. worth the risk IMO.

Personally I don't trust Autozone alternators anymore, when I was younger I made the mistake of replacing the alternator in my 92 Firebird with one from Autozone, and when I got home I realized the bearing was already no-good before I even put it on the car. Returned that one, put the next one they gave me which seemed fine, and on my way home from work that night, black smoke started pouring out from under my hood and left me stranded at 11 oclock at night. Ugh. I use O'reilly's now, similar price also with a lifetime warranty and no problems yet.
