messed up my speedometer cluster sum help please

i was tryin to put blue LED lights behind the dash of my brothers 2000 max cluster but when doing so the cluster started smoking and now the old lights dont work, its weird just the background lights dont work but the warning indicator lights and milege lights work

but now if i buy a used cluster with more miles , how could i get my original miles back on it to know what i really have, i heard but my research hasnt proven that the computer on the car may automatically adjust the new/ used cluster to the miles u have, can anyone confirm this?

i really dont want to go to the dealer they want 800 for the cluster n im not sure how much more to reprogram the milege on there

any help would be appreciated

You can buy a used one and bring it to the dealer to get reprogrammed for around 25 bucks. They may send to the place in NJ. I'll have to look for the name and pm you.

Um......I've never seen a dealer reprogram the odometer. Does the old one still function enough to show the mileage? It's illegal to adjust the odometer. You are going to have to get the RMV/DMV to issue a odometer note stating the true mileage of the vehicle.

The dealership don't reprogram them, they send it to a place in NJ that will. If you order a cluster at the dealership it will come strait from there. At least that's where mine's came from. All I had to do was supply the year, mileage and VIN.

thanks for the replies, my old cluster still shows the milege and that part still lights up , everything seems to work on the cluster warning indicator lights , milege, and the gauges move only thing is the background doesnt light up anymore, so if im driving at night i cant see how fast im goin, my fuel etc

i seen few used ones on ebay sum but most with high milege sumone said the car may adjust ur accurate milege automatically when u install a different cluster , but im not sure , so i dont know if i should just wait for one on sale with milege near mine,

the day b4 it happed i went to do an oil change n it has my miles for that day if that could be proof also

well dont flame me, but i seen people do this on 95-96 maxima. wat they do is connect some wires to a 9V battery, the spedo goes up all the way, like your driving 150 and it turns the odometer as well

I am not sure if you got to actually modify anything on the cluster, but if you didn't, couldn't it be the twist-on light bulbs that somehow were burned out?

can't you order one from Dave B with the correct mileage on it. I'm sure i've seen other posts with similar issues. A new cluster is only 400 last time I checked, maybe cheaper through Dave B.

i think 400 is way too much money for a cluster im tryin to avoid spending that, on ebay they going for around 100 only thing is i havent found one that matches my milege,

what happened to the cluster was when i put in the led bulb to try to change my backround dash to blue it just started smoking up , than after i put in the old bulb just to test it out to make sure it works again and it doesnt work anymore

i guess once u make the cluster smoke maybe i burned out sumthing inside?
im not sure why it smoked for , i used the same size bulbs for the car and got them from a legit website allumination.com

i still didnt screw in the cluster back in my car yet because i dont know what to do

mileage is stored in the cluster memory not the ECU, therefore if you swap out the cluster from another car, it will show the mileage from the cluster not the original to your car. You can have the cluster reproggramed for about $125. Best bet is to find a cluster with mileage close to yours. You can also swap out your original mileage/speed into the new cluster that you purchase or you can have someone look into your smoked cluster, maybee its an easy fix. G/L

remmy did u ever find out the name of the place for me? did u buy a new cluster or they reprogramed a used cluster

my cluster still shows my milege and works, just all my backlights dont work anymore so while driving at night its distracting bc u cant see how fast ur going, ur gas etc , the weird part is all my warning indicator lights still work

knight_yyz who is dave b? if he fixes or programs cluster do u have his contact info?

i called over 100 junk yards in my area and the only luck i had was 2 junk yards selling them for $200 but they cant guarantee what milege is on there, they think its alot more, i only got 66k miles on my car

wish i knew of a place that fixes speedometers in NY , all the places i found online that fixes speedometers are out of state and charge bout $250 but cant gauranteee that that will be the price or that they can fix it without lookin at it

Alright, here's what happened: you cross-linked polarities and fried the lighting circuit, hence why you had smoke billowing from the unit. NOW, you can trace the leads and determine what leads need to be restored and lights changed; the unit is NOT ruined.

Your alternative is to get one, go to fleabay, you can pick one up for under $100. You WILL need to have this reprogrammed, which will run about $100.

If you can get me some pictures I can help you repair this.

how do i avoid cross linking the polarities ? all i did was just put the bulb in the base and twisted locked it into the cluster, they have a few on ebay i have seen but i called many dealers near me to see if they reprogram them , they so far have said no unless i buy a new one from them, im not that good with electronics to trace n replace the leads
