i've seen better deals where i live locally.. i just saw one the other day that was an 02 for $3000 and all it needed was a front bumper cover and a little cleaning
Yeah, I'd avoid the one you posted. Beautiful color, but there are enough things that stand out that makes me wonder if it has been in an accident, or how well the owner cared for the car.
Makes me wonder what my 2003 Maxima SE is worth. I'm the original owner and it has had 2 minor repairs on the left side doors due to parking lot damage that involved paint work but is otherwise completely stock. Nissan also replaced the engine at 58,000 miles due to galling on the cam bearings (kept throwing CEL for cam position sensor).
2003 Nissan Maxima SE, 75,000 original miles, Sheer Silver, Sunroof, PW, PL, Keyless entry...and all the other standard equipment that model came with. All services done per Nissan recommendations. I own it free and clear and it needs strut boots, a tie rod end, and possibly a fuel pump (it is starting to make noise every now and then).
Edit-Oh, and it's an automatic unfortunately.
Don't worry....it's not that far off his price! The asked price is actually on the low side of a 2001 AE the BB value looks like this...Trade-In Fair condition($5450)...Good condition($6375)...Pvt party($7900)....Retail $10400! Now for the 2003 SE which I own as well (TE)...Trade-In Fair condition($5900)...Good($6825)...Pvt party($8475)..retail($11150)!!!! that sucks, just last year the trade in prices were $9000-12000. I couldn't find the listing for an actual Titanium edition auto fully loaded with everything except heated seats and mirrors! It's pretty sad how this great car doesn't quite hold it's value like a 2003 Acura TL which range from $8125-$14250! Maybe Next time I'll buy an Acura!
So I'm looking at joining the Maxima Family. I've spent the past two days searching and browsing thru these forums, particularly the stickies. Thanks very much to the admin and active members. This has been VERY helpful.
I'm deciding between two 2001 Maxima 20AE's. Both Manual Transmission. I have a few general questions about both.
1) Both fill-up with 87 octane, but the manual RECOMMENDS 91 octane. Is this a huge deal? How does this affect the vehicle? How can I talk the price down with this information?
2) One has done a coilpack replacement. The other has not. Is this a huge deal? Can someone please explain this service to me?
3) Neither mentioned MAF. I actually see a lot of reference to MAF, but I can't figure out the definition. Can someone help explain this issue to me?
4) One said that he has never had an O2 sensor problem, but from reading these forums, I hear about this problem with some frequency.
5) One has 87,000miles, the other 106,000miles. Both are 2001's. How big a factor should I consider the high/low mileage?
6) One has been used mostly highway driving, the other in the city, stop and go a lot. This is a manual transmission, is clutch wear a big issue? Anything else related to the different driving styles?
7) Is there anything else I should look into or ask? I have been scanning these pages, but there is so much information.
Thanks everyone, for your help!! I hope to join the family soon.
not sure if you know this or not but 01 maximas have a 3.0 liter engine whereas 02-03s have a 3.5 liter engine....the power difference is night and day...i though i tell you this just FYI
now back to your questions

our cars tend to ping under lower octane gas....but the problem goes away once u switch back to the recommended grade...its not that big of a deal..

yes that's a big deal. Coilpacks cost an arm and a leg and its good if they're replaced with the upgraded version....(its a known problem with our cars)

MAf = Mass Air Flow sensor..basically if this sensor fails, the car would hesitate to accelerate among other things..

o2 sensors go bad sooner or later on every car...so they really aren't car dependant...

It really depends how they're driven...the 87k car could have been beaten the crap out of while the 106K one could have been babied. You godda drive it a good while to see how they drive.

the highway driven would naturally have less wear if they're both driven the same way (which is highly unliekly)

2002 Maxima SE, 80,000 miles, original owner, leather, sun roof, Bose, auto, heated steering wheel package(I forget the name of the package). The only upgrade on the car is Injen CAI and Stillen RSB. I am getting a RX350 yea I know, wife's got one in the oven. The dealer offered me $7500 for it. I paid $31,000 for the car, is $7500 kind of low? or is this what its worth.
My friend just got a 2003. Wants to know if he can swap manual climate to auto climate. I know on my 4th gen, it's not doable without re-wiring, sensors, etc.
He wants to get the Navi, which is why he's asking.

Same thing on the A33B. Need at least 3 more sensors, and either hard wiring it or getting a new dash harness.
It's been asked almost as many times in this forum as it has over in ours.
As with the A32, it's very possible...just prohibitively expensive/time consuming.

Okay thanks. That's what I told him but he made me check anyway lol.
I'm actually piecing together the parts necessary for the A32. I'll be doing a write up, if I go through with it. I kind of have an idea on how to do it, so there is a good chance I will.
I have a chance to buy a 2003 GLE Completely Loaded..... but the downside is that it has 145k. Its all interstate he an insurance agent so tons of windshield time.
Everything is in perfect working order and the price is $6000
Drivetrain should be good to at least 200,000 miles assuming it was properly maintained. Expect that you might have to replace the precats with those miles.

get it and get rid of the precats with cattman headers and y pipe. I wouldn't be afraid of that many miles just keep up on your maintenance and it should be a good car.

Yeah he has all maintenance records and all work done my nissan.... its super clean I just worry about the miles.... i would like to find one with 100k or less and i would be super happy.
OK the guy said he would take $5800....... What do you guys think?
I just worry about the mileage but I know this guy has NEVER had this car past 90! he is an older guy and traveled from WV to NC alot weekly for over a year.
I drove it today and drove like a champ.... the wife is nagging about the mileage
I know nothing about the 2k1 some guy in Ohio looks to be a nice car I am going to drive it this weekend.
Now for the 2k2 I know they guy and bought my last 2k Max from him. He is very picky about everything on his car, of course it has the normal dings and scratches but in great shape. New tires, brakes, always regular maintenance.
Where are you getting the blue book values? I put in that car on kbb and it was around 11k for the excellent value and I do not know the options but i put in the manual transmission, leather seats and moonroof just in case it had those things and still was that low

The SE is someone on autotrader...... I know nothing about the car
Hey guys, im thinking of buying a maxima 5.5 gen (2002) and went to see one today, it has 90k miles, and minor scratches on the outside, tread is decent, it will at least pass inspection for this year, interior was mint, comes with every single option including nav. Clutch felt fine, and we took it on the highway, shifted through all the gears (revved it all the way in first and second) everything checked out fine. Only issue was that the service engine soon light was on, not sure what that could be but regardless it was on. It was at a mini dealership, maybe 40 cars there. We discussed the price for a while, it was 8900 to start, I asked him to do bit better, he budged down to 8500, so i told him i was looking to hear more around 8, and on the way driving home, he called back telling me he'd sell it for 8000 as is. If he sold it for 8500 he said he would have brought it to a mechanic to fix anything that it needed, but it didnt need brakes or anything so basically it would just be to take care of that light...any thoughts thanks
Great, thanks, i might take a look at another maxima se 2002 tomorrow its got 104k and every option except for navi including hlsd. asking price is 7300, and its only a 1 owner car, if i could get him down to 6k that may be a better road to take
Oh great thanks, i'll definitely ask for that, it seems like he's done all the maintainence over the course of the cars life, he says it was garaged too which would be a plus. If its got good tread and good brakes, i'll see where I can get. I currently own a 97 crown vic that im just gettin sick of, is a nice riding car and has all the options, but the wheel wells are starting to rust and the paint is coming off the roof, and thanks again
Yes a maxima would be a great upgrade, and I struck a deal last night, he wasnt willing to go down as much as i thought, but i got it for 6900, pending an inspection from my buddy who is a mechanic on monday. If he says its good, i'll hand over the check. I couldnt turn down the deal, 1 owner, adult owned, all options except nav, and it was garaged, all the recalls were done, exterior and interior were in great condition for the year (2002). Now my days of full time manual shifting are here, i'll be sure to post some pics.
Hi all, just joined the site but owned a 4th generation until it was stolen and totaled. Looking to purchase an 02 SE 6sp and I went to test drive and I noticed I had to "pull up a little" and pull hard when closing the door. The seller is the 2nd owner who purchased w/25K and now has 103K on it. He said he thinks the hinges are causing it and assures no accidents. He said his friend with a 2000 is having the same problems.
Have any of you heard/seen this problem and how much does it generally cost to repair?
Hey everybody, first post on the forum!
Thank you to cueball for his post because it covered mostly everything I was going to ask. And to everyone else for great info!
I'm currently driving a Pontiac Grand Am, and I'm not really liking it. Wanted a Maxima or an Alero (I know big difference lol) for my first car but went thru a bit of a rough time so just accepted what my parents could provide me with. I am looking into getting into a more reliable car as I'm a recent graduate, that just started working full time and trying to save money and the Grand Am is starting to show it's quality (new repair every 2-5 months and it's only got 212,000km/132,000k miles) making it impossible to save money. I've always loved the Maxima's look (2000+) and based on what I'm reading the Maxima will be my perfect bet for a replacement! I have been looking at Maxima models 2000-2005, and was leaning more towards 2002 and newer for the added bonuses of stock HID's opposed to buying the bulbs, and the bigger more powerful engine. But after doing some insurance homework, the price difference in coverage 00/01 vs 02+ was $100 p/month! So to stay with my saving motive I've decided to go with the 2000-2001 models as I found a 2001 model for $6,500, and it's an Anniversary Edition (with 120,000km/75k miles). Seems like the perfect win/win situation as my insurance will be cheaper, and the $12,000 I was considering on spending for my next purchase is cut down significantly! Just a quick question about equipment differences, were the 2000-2001 models equipped with a heated steering wheel? And would I still be able to put the windows down via keyless remote/key in driver door? Been working 55 hour weeks, but hoping to possibly see the car tommorow night! Was going to post link but at work and Kijiji is a blocked website.
Guess I shouldn't really say it's "only got"... That was me comparing it to what Maxima, and other Nissan/Japanese brand vehicle owners say when they got to 170,000k miles before seeing major repairs (if they even have any by that point!).
Edit: Also spent a few hours going thru the entire 5/5.5 Gen threads, and found this one helpful too (quick summary wise)
Went and looked at the car last night, and I got to say now I know why a lot of you love your Maxima's! Drove like a beauty, very nice suspension, smooth transmission and engine, and and the seats are really comfortable! 2001 Anniversary Edition, interior is in almost new condition, and the back bench/passenger seat look virtually unsat in, driver seat has no tears and almost no visible wear. Had a TCS OFF light on, with "SLIP" constantly lit as well as the ABS light. But vehicle will be coming fully certified and e-tested and every light will be addressed and fixed. Has 125,000km on it (78,000 miles) for about $7000 CAD, tax included (about $6,029.87 US) Checked under vehicle for leaks, and no visible ones, and engine looks clean. Pushed each corner of car in and car wasn't bouncy so struts seem good as well (also during test drive purposely went over bumps, and didn't hear any sounds). Overall I think I found myself a pretty good buy!
Price seems a bit steep unless all taxes etc. incuded.
if u search around you can find alot of 01-03's in that range.
Welcome to the max world and enjoy
