Easiest fix for EVAP code?

My SES light has come on intermittently as a result of my gas cap (or so I assume...). Have pulled the codes several times just to make sure, and its always the EVAP leak. Now it is on consistently, and I'm getting to the point that I ignore it, which is something I shouldn't do. I always clean the sealant ring and twist the cap 5-10 clicks at the pump, which apparently isn't working anymore. Any tips on shutting the f***ing light off or do I need to replace something? I'm sick of explaining why my ugly SES light is always on!!!!

use a smoke machine, locate the green cap on one of the lines under the hood, initiate smoke to that input whilst running, look for smoke= evap leak

I have the same problem. I removed my gas cap in my garage to wipe some overspray crud off and when I drove my car a few hrs later the light came on. I had AutoZone check it and I got 2 codes, failed canister vent solenoid and failed EVAP pressure sensor. I'm going to replace the cap first and drive for a day or two.

If that doesn't work I'll have my mechanic replace my canister. I had this same problem with my 97 SE only there was a strong smell of gas when I parked in my garage. I had everything replaced for around $300.

I have to get it fixed #1 because I hate having that light on and #2 I'm moving to Alabama in a few months and I don't want to drive that far with what I consider to be a major problem.

i got shyt for bumping 3 yr old thread regarding EVAP codes that i found.
mine are p1448, p0455 and p1800. they're saying that by replacing EVAP CANISTER and VENT CONTROL VALVE should fix the problem.

after it clicks when you fill your tank, do you round up to the even dollar? like $65.85 to $66? they're saying you shouldnt, it's no good for the canister.

well i didn't know, now im not gonna do it again. i'll just round up "before it clicks"
i ordered both parts and i'll replace them and i'll see how it goes.

you mean the parts? at the stealership.
here in canada, it would run me 300 bux for parts and own labour.

I wouldn't recommend buying the parts from Canadian stealerships. There's a massive mark-up. Try Dave B. Even with the shipping, tax etc. it will probably cost less. Obviously price it out on both ends first though.

ya i did that.
the canister is about the same with shipping and everything.
but the vent control valve is cheaper.

i was in MN 3 weeks ago. if the light came on before that, i would have saved some money right there and back then US$ and CAN$ was almost the same. bad timing i guess lol

total cost for two parts (with gas cap about $243)

for those who have these codes p1448 and 0455, i say replace both parts AFTER you try a new gas cap.

if your gas tank hole looks like this you might wanna clean it up first before you use you new one. i closed the two little holes with window seal so the sand doesnt get in there anymore

Thats exactly what I did too. I guess I'm calling DaveB again.

I'm thankful but confused now. I removed my gas cap wiped it down and put it back on; the light stayed on. My car felt noticeably sluggish so I didn't punch it like I normally do. I looked at my gas mileage and was surprised to see that I was over 320 miles with over a 1/4 tank left and the DTE said 70 miles. I'm gonna fill up today @3.45 a gal and hope after I put the cap on that the SES light does not come on again in a day or two.

That's not the case anymore. Try north end Nissan in Milton, I can't say what other dealerships are doing but I have bought some oem parts from them over the last few weeks and the prices have been consistently lower than courtesy Nissan. Not knocking Dave B., his prices are great but before you order check around. The shipping price just may make it worthwhile to keep it in Canada.

I just replaced my evap canister and vent control valve. It wasn't bad at all to do, and I'm not much of wrench turner. The vent control valve is attached to the canister by two bolts that will most likely snap off so you probably won't be able to reuse them. I suggest you have replacements handy before you start the job.

I've had this problem going on for months now. I replaced the cap, reset the light, and it came back on in a few weeks.

So i brought the car to my local shop (STS) and they said the evap canister looks fine and that when they pressure tested the cap, the new cap was bad. they claimed it was because it was an aftermarket gas cap. i replaced the cap with an OEM cap, a month goes by, and now the light is back on - same codes 1448 and 0455.

it seems like i should just replace the evap canister and vent control? will filling in those little holes next to the gas tank input actually solve the problem or just temporarily mask the underlying issue of the evap canister?

the vent control valve does not open when commended by the ECM. It is a solenoid and it is seized. That is your problem and you cannot mask it.
You also replace the canister cause it gets damaged in the process. End of story and no band aids possible unless you get lucky with a good used one at a junk yard.
Like i said you drive a maxima so go fix it!
