Swapping 03 6spd into 00-01 possible?
Okay, I've looked through all the threads I thought would contain anything about this.
I have been looking at buying a gen5 sometime in Feb 08. I've been leaning towards a 02-03 because of the extra 30+ ponies and also the extra gear in the manual.
A friend of mine just had his 03 totalled because of fire damage (house fire). The insurance is willing to let him buy back the car at an extremely good price. My buddy is willing to buy back the car if I pay for it. I'm almost positive his gearbox is okay (it is a HSLD unit). The engine is most likely okay internally, although the wiring harness is melted. The harder plastic peices like the MAF don't seem to be affected. In any case, the buy back price is so good that if only the transmission is good I think I come out ahead.
After all that, my question is, has anybody ever tried to mate a gen5.5 6spd to either a gen 4 or 5 3.0 liter engine? I know that with enough money applied ANYTHING can be done, but I'm not looking to shovel money into another project.
Issues that come to mind are;
Will the bellhousing bolt up to the 3.0 liter?
Is there a big difference in size between the 5spd and the 6spd?
Are there differences in the size of the Flywheel, clutch, pressure plate?
Will 5spd axles fit the 6spd or will I have to make a mish mash axle?
Are the transmission mounts anywhere near each other? Or will I have to fab up new mounts?
I think I remember one uses rod shifting linkage and one uses cable? So I'll have to either move the entire linkage assembly over or fab up some sort of adaptor.
The idea of a gen 4 or 5 6spd also appeals to me even if I have to give up 30 ponies to do it.
Also, it was late last night but didn't I read somewhere that someone had put a 3.5 liter into either a gen 4 or 5? If the engine turns out to be okay I might try to swap the entire drivetrain over.
