Like was already mentioned I would hope you'd select different rings if taking on the task of essentially rebuilding the motor. In my experience with non technically advanced rebuilds, I just did one on a 4.3L V6 from a chevy s10 pickup last year and to re-ring/re-bearing/re-gasket and have the machine work done to the engine alone I believe cost me in the range of $600-700 with me doing all of the disassembly/reassembly.

wow, in the butt eh? so they were charging you like 200$/hr?? it seriously only takes like a half hour to hone the cylinders. unless you mean that the shop did the rings, bearings and gaskets.

Haha no I should have clarified, between me purchasing parts/tools to install and also having the machine work done (turn and polish crank, pressure wash/prime/paint block, install freeze plugs/new oil galley plugs, + crank and rod bearings) was around $700 total!

I used to shift at 2000 all the time few months ago and my oil level was always the same...lately its been 2500-3000 and I see I burned a bit
Not just that, but one thing I notice about this engine vs. my old 3rd gen is that when I fire this baby up in the morning or after just getting back in, the engine revs all the way up to 2000 rpm before coming back down. Most cars just hop up to 1500 rpm. I wonder if the sudden high revs before oil can circulate efficienty affect engine durability and wear or not.

Well, thanks everyone who replied to my original 3.5 Oil Burner post. Some good discussion in here, and some interesting new theories.
Is there any agreement as to in what year vehicle the OB 3.5 problem has been corrected?

I have 225,000 kilometers on my 2003 Maxima and it's been losing oil just after warranty expired...surprise eh?

I had heard that the problem may be the valve covers in that the holes get "plugged up". Replacing the valve covers is supposed to solve the problem. However, I discussed with my dealer and he said it works 30-40% of the time. He also told me that in my case I need a new engine. Nissan does not do ANY motor rebuilds.

There is a separate engine part number for automatic transmission Maximas and manual transmission Maximas. The oil loss problem is only with the manual transmission models....according to the dealer. Sounds ridiculous to me.

My Maxima loses a liter oil every 1000 km's....that's a quart every 600 miles.

I'm not sure if using better quality rings would solve the problem. I think it's a design issue. The oil burning will come back in a short amount of time because the motor design is poor. I'd like to know how the new Maxima's and Infinity motors have changed in piston ring design.

At the end of the day, we need a motor rebuild or sell the car.
