Who has had the ypipe heatshield rattle?

So here it is: I was getting the annoying rattle mostly heard in 2nd gear (not 1st at all for some reason) under slight acceleration. I got under the car and saw that the heat shield of the ypipe was making contact w/ the crossmember. So I had a big chunk of the heatshield welded off...problem NOT solved though. I ended up getting Nissan to put a new motor mount b/c they explained to me that due to unequal support, the heatshield would continue to make contact w/ the crossmember. Fine, that was replaced and the rattle subsided.

But the rattle is still there to an extent. It seems on and off now. My question is who here has had this same rattle and how did you go about fixing it? The ypipe heatshield will only come off when taking the ypipe out. So has anyone does this and did the noise go away? Or my other alternative is to get a performance ypipe that has no heathsield. Any input is appreciated, thanks

I've got the rattle...

But I only use Premium @ BP along with Cattman Y-pipe

Before with stock Y-pipe the rattle was around 1700 - 1900 RPMS

Now with Cattman Y-pipe it can be heard at 2500 RPMS + louder than stock rattle

So if anyone has fixed the problem let me know. I plan on getting the car on a lift soon so that I can see if anything needs to be tightened or is touching something.

Got the rattle you're describing but cant locate where exactly its coming from. I hear it temporarily when rpm drops between 2000 and 1800 or so.

I would remove the heatshield(s) altogether. Seems logical to me.

Are there any negative effects to removing the heat shield?

no, not really. Mine have been removed forever.

Just don't drive through any fields of tall, dry grass or you might set it on fire

My cat heat sheild (the one between the cat and the ground) some how fell off the day I ordered my y-pipe/test pipe.

I must have been doing aroun 45 on the street near my house when I hear a noise and see in my rearview mirror this piece of metal bouncing off the road. "I hadn't driven over anything so where was this thing from?" I told myself.

Backed up and got out to check it out. Sure enough it said NISSAN on it so I put it in the trunk for later examination.

It had rusted off. Pics to come soon.

Dangerous!! LoL wonder if you've got less noise now?

PS: The heatshield removal doesn't work if you've got an aftermarket Y-pipe/headers, usually they're gone.

But I may know the culprit of my rattles. I forgot that there weren't any gaskets installed. Will have to try and report back.

there are heatshields all the way back for the full exhaust. If you have a rattle other than where the headers and y pipe would have them, then is it ok to remove all heatshields?

I was thinking about jacking the car up and put on some screws with a washer onto the heatshields so they stop moving....What do you guys think about it?

I have it also. But I've had it on every car I've owned. Damn winters in Boston do a number on it. I only get the rattle in the morning but once the car warms up it goes away. Sometimes i get it when my a/c is on also

Well i wanted to chime in as i had this problem of the vibrating heat shield ( thought it was before checking). When start up or slowly accelerating it would give a slight rattle.
changed oil yesterday and tapped on the heatlshield and it was definitely the rattle i had. So i unbolted it and removed it from the exhaust. So nice now. no noice or rattle or anything. Sound much nicer than before. So yea for me the heatshield was a POS

was this the heatshield over the cat or the ypipe?

the one i removed was surrounding the y pipe. the top piece is still there. Its somehow held on there fairly tight plus trying to get it out would be a beotch. I removed the bottom section and wa-la. No more vibration or noise,. Now i notice the wire mesh stuff that surrounds the flex pipe is breaking. One thing after another.

its not hard at all. Took me about 5 minutes. There are 4 or 5 bolts that need to be undone and then the bottom piece will come out. When i tried to unbolt mine the bolts were rusted right on there so 2 turns of the rachet snapped the nut and bolt clean apart Good for me. The only one i had a problem with was the one rearest on the shield. Couldnt get a socket on it so twisted and bent it till it snapped off. I think they are 10mm bolts. if they dont fit try a 3/8 in socket. Best of luck and im sure thats your problem. Let me know. Sounds so nice now on start up and takeoff. No rattle whatso ever and you never know what your gonna find under your car. The plastic pans under the front end, i found a wire cutter i was looking for and a mysterious bumping sound id finally gone.

I never had a problem with the stock Y........
Then I installed a Warpspeed Y this weekend, and removed all heat shields in the process.......
Now there is a violent vibration on acceleration, but it goes away once you get up to speed. I figure it has something to do with the flex in the car as you accelerate. Here's the thread I started earlier today if anyone is interrested......

banging on the cross-member right around the cat is pretty normal too, you could use washers or just remove it to get it out of the way

Also shields are "supposed" to make passing air reach a faster velocity due to higher heat thus resulting in more horsepower. It's probably very minimal.

I had it 2 months ago..

I took the car to the garage because I had a nail in a tire. The guy was fixing it and I asked him if I could take a brief look because I had a little rattle between 1300 et 2000rpm.Took me 10 seconds to figure out what it was.Putted a bolt and a nut to get the two h-shield sandwich back together.Stopped making the noise right after that!
