JWT pop charger

RT Cat
Some custom piping
Magnaflow or RT PowerMax muffler? (don't want it too loud) - recommendations?

- remove stock resonator
- no plans for y-pipe

Sound sane? Say yes and I'm going to the muffler shop tomorrow

P.S. (3 am in a sleepless night) -- how about DynoMax Ultra Flo SS muffler + a DynoMax 2.5" Bullet to replace my stock resonator? I know, I know... too many questions in one place.

Yup. Sounds sane to me. But be careful when you say "no plans for y-pipe". I didn't have plans for a Y-pipe for a very long time. But this place gets to you, if you know what I mean.

If I were you, I'd start by installing the JWT Popcharger and the RT Cat and removing your resonator. See how you like that. Then replace your muffler if you want more sound.

At idle, my Max purrs like a kitten. When I drive around town in 3rd or 4th gear, it's a pleasant tone indeed. When I'm cruising on the highway, it has a nice, muffled, low rumble. But when I hit it hard at WOT, or when I downshift, the exhaust wails! It's a loud, intimidating, yet terrific tone that reminds you of a V8 engine sound. It is a true Jekyll and Hyde situation. Yeah, there's some noise, but you have the volume control under your right foot at all times. Crank it up!

magnaflow makes a free flow racing muffler that can be used in this case as a mid-pipe resonator. it will quiet the car a bit but still maintain the hp. they're only about $ 60 plus installation. worth the price bigtime. no more second looks from the man. if you're local in orange county, ca call rocky at 714 841-0101 he'll hook you up. he's in huntington beach. tell him maxnout referred you.

No muff?

I grabbed this off the net somewhere. Supposed to be a Maxima (dunno the year) without a muffler:

That is an odd sounding car therr. I am not sure if I see some sort of dune buggy car driving in the sand or a some ricer trying to squeeze more HP out of their Honda.

I'm not sure if Magnaflow's racing mufflers and their resonators are one and the same, but they'll certainly accomplish the same purpose. My Magnaflow resonator is 22" long and 2.5" in diameter. It's a perfect fit where the stock resonator used to sit. It ran me $90.00 installed and it definitely helps. My exhaust system with the Y-pipe was just too freaking loud until I installed the resonator. Now it's just sort of freaking loud.

Not so "freaking LOUD"! ?

Thanks, Hoon. I agree that a catback system in combination with a Y-pipe will yield more high end power. But as we've both discovered, the Y-pipe will also magnify the amount of sound produced by ANY other modifications to the exhaust system. The more extensive the modifications, the more sound that will be produced. So if you modify several things all at once as in the case of a bolt-on catback system, you can expect to end up with a system that's "freaking LOUD"! Some people may be willing to pay that price. Some may not. For those that are not, you've been warned.
Not so "freaking LOUD"! ?

Is it because I don't have a Y-pipe.
The New exhaust is not much louder
then the stock. Why is that? I was so worried
it might be too loud and
I was hoping it would be just loud enough. I was
wrong in both cases. At low RPMs you get a bit of
a louder sound but no mean growl that I was looking for
when you really get on it... I am a bit disappointed at
that.. I didn't check it for leaks, that could be the
reason it is not as loud as everyone is saying it is supposed to be..

Are you saying I need to drop another
4 bills to get the mean deep sound I was originally
looking for? Even then will it be too loud or not load enough?

I believe the y pipe does help make it louder. I put on a GReddy EVO on an IS300 (Jane's brother's car), on Wednesday..... I expected it to be loud, but to my suprised, it's more quiet than my setup.

Time to plump down 4 bills.

You want loud? Chop off the resonator on the b pipe and go with a straight pipe. Probably cost you half a bill at a muffler shop.

Let's see . . . Y-pipe, GReddy exhaust and no resonator. Yeah, that should be loud enough. But just in case it isn't, you could always remove your catalytic converter and install a test pipe, MAXIN24-7.

Then, for the final coup de gras, you might consider installing a contact microphone on your pop charger and connecting it to a 1000 watt rms mono amplifier coupled to two or three 15" full range trunk-mounted speakers. That setup should keep you awake on those peaceful twilight drives around Long Island.

irvine78 You have any way to post a .WAV file of your
exhaust? This way I can get an idea of what it might sound like with a Y pipe.

No, no, no....here's what you gotta do:

You want loud? Buy a 502 big block. 4 barrel carb, edelbrock super high flow heads. Really nice big race cam. Shorty headers. Nothing after the headers. Fire it up. That's loud.

For a max? Take out all 62 lbs odf soudn deadening in the car. add a CAI. Add cattman ypipe, to straight 3" pipe all the way out the back. That's about the loudest you can get with a max. And if you think that's loud, run it next to the 502 and see if you can even hear that the max is on... hehe, love american muscle.

sorry dude...i have no way to post a .WAV file of my exhaust...only thing i can tell you right now without the .WAV file is that the exhaust is loud from outside, but not so much from inside...the tone's little bit raspy for my taste, so it's not like APEXi deep tone bass..but still drones like nobody's business....

Tubing is 60mm - 70mm according to the GReddy web site. That translates to 2.36" - 2.76".

No.

But listen to the exhaust clips in the Stickies to find a set-up that is close.
