Energy Suspension Motor Mount Install (with pics)

I had a feeling my motor mounts were shot, when I lifted off and pressed on the thottle, there was an uncomfortable jolt. So I got under there and looked and saw that the rear mount was completely broken.

So, I ordered some Energy Suspension Motor Mounts from Cattman Performance.

Here is the crossmember with the two mounts that are going to be replaced.

Pressed out the old mounts, and pressed in the new ones.

Here is the rear mount with the new mount installed.

Here is a picture of the old front mount with the new mount next to it. The poly mounts sit about 1/4" lower than the stock ones do.

Here is the crossmember with the new mounts installed.

And a pic of the car.

They made a big difference in on/off throttle response as well as the clutch engagement is much more defined. You can definitely feel the vibration at idle, but since my old mount was broken it vibrated way more before. I don't mind the vibration, the only downside is little things rattle more than before such as the hood on the bumper. I will have to go through and fix little rattles. Any questions, feel free to ask.

I have a subframe off my 96, if it is the same. This car actually does have some rust..

The press is this one: http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...6415_200326415

It has 127,000 miles on it.

I was gonna tackle this job this weekend, but rain + no press = no go.

That press looks like a freaking good deal, though! I was expecting $200+. Might have to think about getting one

you really dont need a professional press to do this job, i just used some 2x8 pieces of wood, drilled a hole though the middle, and got a long bolt with a nut and it pushed in just fine with a little effort.

^^Yeah if I were to do it this weekend I was going to think of something creative considering I have no tools or $$, but I figured that I'll just wait on it and bring it into a mechanic I know back home that'll do it in 2 seconds....I'm leaving to Texas soon and didn't want to mess up my motor mounts on a Sunday with all the shops closed in case I cant press the new ones in..

the hardest part was getting the original mounts out. i took a hammer and a large chisel to bend the inner ring out of circle, then slipped the mount out. it took ALOT of hammering.

phatmax, did you take any pics of pressing your mount out?

I was planning on cutting them out or something. I do have a chisel and hammer so I'd try that first. I might just rent a press at autozone like someone suggested and go to town

I took the crossmember off myself and removed the mounts then took them to a local privately owned shop. I paid the guy $20 under the table and he was happy it took him 15 mins to remove the old ones and install the new ones.

No I did not take any pics, but what I did was I used a metal piece of pipe and pressed out the old one. It destroyed the mount but the mount was already destroyed.. so on the front one, i wanted to salvage it.. so I ground 3 of the welds down, it allowed the mount to open and it came right out.. I then welded it back up together and pressed in the new mount.

If I had time, I would of gotten 2 pieces of pipe, one with a 3.5" ID and the other with a 3.5" OD and that should of done the trick.

Also, the jack and creeper set is not the one I have, I only have the jack, the jack stands are I think from Walmart and the creeper is from Harbor Freight.

so no wheel hop right? how is the handling? any improvement? and also, the mounts were slightly lower than the stock mounts right? did that drop your drive train as a result? (asking because of what meximax did which was dropping the drive train by drilling new holes... he said that his handling was dramatically improved.)

I don't know about wheel hop as I have not done any hard launches. It seems to of helped stiffen the entire car up, but that could be since the old one was busted.

manual. Autos have a different sized front mount. I paid about $80 for both of mine. The single rear mount for autos is around $60 IIRC.

I just bought a set of these from cattman. I was pulling out my transmission yesterday and I noticed that the rear mount was shot. So I pulled out the cross memeber. It was $85 for the front and rear energy suspension motor mounts. Even with the broken rear motor mount I never noticed wheel hop ir vibration. Does anyone make the two side mounts in poly?

And just to add, you can swap the front mount on an AT to a MT front mount and use both inserts. Just keep the harness for the electronic mounts plugged in and ziptie the other end of the wire that is supposed to go into the mount somewhere out of the way, and you won't get a CEL.

I'll probably just go the machine shop route - although I could have used the press to do my wheel bearings I'm sure.

I do have the same cabinets in my garage as phatmax . . .

it wont sag alot, a very small amount. but it could be enough to where you need to raise it a little bit with a jack and a 2x10 as a spacer just to get the alignment right when putting the crossmember back in. it is just different for every car.

how many motor mounts hold up the engine ?

I need to replace mine as well, since I get a bang/jolt from a stop/low speed if i accelerate too quickly.

Is this what I need? I'm automatic 3.5 if that matters

Mine still gives a nice jolt.. At this point I am not sure if it is from the stiff mounts or if I need to stiffen the remaining two mounts up the homemade way..

there should be more vibration and such now that you have stiffer mounts in.

i could be wrong, but i believe Broaner or some other heavy modding guy tried poly-filling the transmission mount and timing chain cover mount, and after awhile it cracked and broke apart because of the way those mounts twist during acceleration.

you do not need to put a jack under the engine or transmission. it will not fall out of the engine bay with the transmission mount and timing chain cover mount holding it up. it is completely safe when it is held by only these two mounts.
if it isnt safe, and it does fall out, you have some big problems with your car that you should be noticing now, and i am sorry for telling you that it was safe.

If you are worried stick a bottle jack or jack stand under the engine.

two on the cross member, one on the timing cover, one on the trannsmission, 4 total, not including the 4 little rubber isolators where the crossmember bolts to the car, but those are usually only junk on high mileage/age 4th gens.

AWESOME THREAD!! SWEET PICS!! As for the press.....if I had a dollar for every time I've used my dremel, I'd probably use some of that money to buy my third one......

I used the floor jack under the motor/trans. To keep it up and also when installing the crossmember it needed to be jacked/lowered into the correct position. It's not going to fall out, though.

I know about the vibrations, that is not what I am talking about. I'd be interested to hear more about experiences poly filling the other two mounts.
