Question : Why should the oil dip stick not removed while filling oil

On the front of the engine there is this yellow label that say "Never remove oil dip stick while filling engine oil". Can someone educate me on the importance of this label? I haven't see such a label on many vehicles -- I am just curious why Nissan is so particular about it.

better question....
why would you feel the need to remove the dipstick when filling the oil?

Who cares why he wants to know. Maybe he's just curious why Nissan would make such a statement. It seems harmless to have the dipstick out while filling with oil. To me it even seems more logical to do it with the dip out.

Damn good question. I've done oil fills with the dipstick removed and the oil has never "backflowed up" the tube. I know the oil drains down onto the dipstick when you add oil, but why the warning on the label, maybe someone knows?

im pretty sure that its one of those stupid legal disclaimer.
why is it there? because some stupid person did it, hurt themselves, and sued.

the note is probably there to help reduce the risk of forgetting to put it back in. when i was 16, i took the dipstick out during an oil change and forgot to put it back in, but it actually caused no problems. there was just a little bit of oil spray on the underside of the hood and only minimal oil loss.

Probably more of a "it lost something in the translation" thing. They don't want you to forget to reinstall the dipstick, to maintain a "closed' crankcase and prevent the escape of breather vapors/blowby gases. And air entering the crankcase via the dipstick tube will not be "seen" by the MAF when it enters the intake via the PCV valve, possibly affecting the EC/fuel delivery system.

it's no disclaimer issue or forgetting to put it back or anything. It's cause while you pour the oil in if you pour it too fast it will leak out through the dipstick. It's happened to me couple of times. It's only the VQ that has that issue.

Yup I like this explanation. Japanese are really **** when it comes to warnings and doing things the "proper" way. Keep it closed and oil won't come gushing out.

The reason youd have it out is when changing the oil, you pull out the dipstick & take off the filler cap, then replace the drain plug and add oil. I was wondering about this too, but the funnel i use isnt very big so i haven't had any problems with oil coming out.

It does leak out

On my 2013 Maxima, I had the dipstick removed while filling the oil during an oil change. I use a very big funnel that has a wide opening into the engine compartment. After filling the engine with oil (using a 5 quart jug) I had a puddle of oil on my garage floor. It came out the dipstick port.

Believe or not, same thing happened to me. Dipstick was out maybe couple inches or so while I was pouring new oil in the engine. I am sure I didn't spill any. After I was done changing oil, there was a small oil puddle ( not much though, very little but noticeable) on the ground. I checked to see where it was coming from but I couldn't see. I wiped the oil under the engine, then let the engine running for a while to see anymore oil leak, but there was none. Then I saw that warning level under the hood, then it all made sense. I guess that warning label is there for a reason. While adding oil , make sure dipstick is all the way in if you don't want oil to spill out from dipstick tube.

also may be there to prevent pouring too much oil in the engine because after you change the oil and pour in a quart or 2, the dipstick reading will be inaccurate for at least 20-30 minutes on the VQ.
