That looks beautiful , I can't wait to get all the parts needed for the BBK.
I got some bigger wheels so that should help on the clearance.
I guess I need to start looking for calipers this weekend. I hope rebuilding them is not as hard as it sounds. Never done any brake work before but got to start somewhere.
I've read a few write-ups, and from what irish says, I don't think it should be that hard.. "re-build" makes it sounds complicated.. really its just a matter of cleaning and changing some seals..
The job looks good though. When its time for my next brake job I'll definitely think about upgrading to these. nice work~!
Take a sledgehammer to one and see what the outcome is.
ugly welds: 1
sledgehammer: 0
Those are some of my more ugly welds. didn't have much time so I had to run out there and do them in order to get these parts shipped. not my best work.
also note there isn't much stress on them in the first place. the back plate itself takes all of the shear forces and the bushings are there simply as washers. The first few sets of these I made and tried on my personal cars weren't even welded- just used the bushings as spacers. They've been on there for over 5 years and 60,000 miles (about 8,000 of that is track miles too) without a single incident. may be ugly, but they work.
thanks Matt...that's what I said as well, but thought I'd have it said from the horse's mouth...

The job looks just as good in person as it does in the pics. Nice job again, Irish. Now: my D2's, RSB, FSTB, new VQ35, racing cat, -gen, Pilot Sports and 6th gen front brakes vs. your 3.0 with the Y-pipe, 5 sp, stage II LTB, springs, shocks, FSTB, RSB, GAB and racing wheels and tires... who will win in the next autocross? Time will tell....
Very sweet. I've been wanting to do that for a while now. Do you think they'd fit under a set of 16 inch 5zigen wheels? I'd still have to be able to run my drag radials.
No hope fitting under the 16"s these calipers are massive!
Hey Irish nice job, I did the 13" cobra version on my 4th gen obviously with Jeff92se's bracket and Matt's SS brake lines, interesting you chose to rebuild, I used to drive a 300ZX-TT and was in a club with a few mechanics etc and none of them had ever rebuilt those brakes and one of my pals had over 300K on his, but hey better to be safe than sorry and a good time to do them. $1000 for the rears for 20% braking certainly seems over kill, like you say a good set of Hawks HPS should suffice, I was considering doing the 6th Gen set up as I think that would suit my needs, no autocross just regular day to day stuff. Also the 300ZX calipers wouldn't clear my stock 17" winter wheels,. I see you mentioned initial bite was very similar. Would you say the 6th gen upgrade from stock 5th is worthwhile? Which leads to my next question... What are you gonna do with the 6th gen calipers?
On a side note I like the color you chose, I had mine red which screamed hey look at me being a little older and wiser now, the black sort of says hey I'm serious about my braking but I don't need the world to know about it. Nice work!

The 6th gen calipers/rotors setup is actually quite good...a big improvement over stock...alot of pad area on those monsters and they have decent "feel."
Mine are already sold, paid for, and installed on GBAUER's car sorry.....
Yeah, I went with the 12.6" rotors over the 13" cobras for clearance....as you can see up in this thread they just fit inside my winter wheels (the G35 17s)....
Everything's gotta be black. My little rule on the car is everything on the outside needs to be black, white, clear, or a shade of gray....except of course taillights and such (gotta keep it fairly legal!). I think the only colors on the outside of my car outside of the taillights are the red Hella horns behind the grille and the red "nissan" writing on the centercaps. Low key is best...I don't need the attention from police and ricer Civics

From the looks of it irish, from the contact surface, that those rotors will warp very easily, and cause bad brake vibration. I mean the contact surface only goes about 2/3 into the rotor. Aren't you concerned with that? It still looks like a piece of artwork. And the "NISSAN" just adds to it.

The rotors are equally as strong on the outer edge as the inner....there are ALOT of guys who have been running this setup and the Cobra setup for years now and nary a problem that I've heard of....including some guys who road race with them...
Frankly, I'm not worried about it at all....the 6th gen rotors are seriously beefy (and weigh a ton)

the thing that i dont like about it is that not all fo the pad is used against the rotor. even on my set-up there is some pad surface that is not used and maxs and i had to spend alot of time getting it as close as it is now.

I don't see what that will hurt though....because of the material the pad is made of, a little "ridge" will stay at the end as the rest of the pad wears, but it's not rubbing anything in particular.
If you're worried about it, just take the pads off, look at where the "line" is where it drops off the rotor, and use a dremel to grind the edge of the pad down....

$150 for rotors
$100 for brackets, or something like that
$80 for Hawk HPS pads
$40 for caliper rebuild kit
$30 for shims and hardware
$80 for 2 junkyard calipers
about $500 if you don't include the 2nd set of calipers I bough trying to problem solve....

depends of how cheap you can find the calipers...I got them at a junkyard for like $40, but you can get rebuilt ones (loaded with new hardware) from pep boys for $80 (+50 core since you don't have any to trade in) each.
If you get JY ones, expect to spend about $50 on new shims, spring clips, etc from DaveB
Pads: Hawk HPS run about $70 for this application
Rotors: OEM/Brembo or other brand 6th gen rotors run anywhere from $50-100 each, or Matt's 2-pc rotors run about $500 for the pair.
Brackets and SS lines: From Matt or Jeff, IIRC they are about $100
My original setup with OEM rotors cost aroudn $450 for everything, and then I pretty much doubled that by getting the 2pc rotors.

roughly 900 for your set up?,.... Not Too bad.. even if you add rims to that package its still less than a Big brake kit (aside from stillens base BBK). Mods PLS consider this for a sticky, I believe there is enough Info here to do this conversion.

Man!!! That's a huge price jump just for rotors. So after driving on them for a while do you feel like the performance diffrence on rotors justifies the increase.

yes....better handling, better acceleration, more responsive steering, and less crashing over bumps due to reduced unsprung weight. You can feel the difference just as you can when you go from a 25lb stock wheel to a 15lb lightweight wheel....
also, better cooling due to curved vanes
and then there is the fact that they look damn nice through my wheels
I'd rather spend a bunch on something that actually helps performance and has no downside, rather than spend that money on 2 12's in the trunk or a carbon-fiber hood, that's for sure.
