Okey, I'm a total newbie to Maximas. I have a modded Grand Prix GTP right now and I'm looking to buy a 5th gen Maxima as a daily driver. I have a few questions.

-I will most likely be buying an 02-03 with the 3.5 engine but if I find a good deal on an 01 I'll settle with it. Is the 3.0 engine any less reliable than the 3.5?

-I'll probable be buying one with a stick shift, but again if I find an automatic for the right price. How reliable are the auto transmissions in these cars?

-Any silly annoying common problems with these cars?

Thanks.

The 3.0 is known to be more reliable in a sense. The 3.5 has been known to burn oil but both motors good. MAF sensors go bad on 02's sometimes, coilpacks go bad. Others will add more.

This means you have a misfire(multiple cylinder).

Why not check the 3 rear?

This portion of your post seems to point to a MAF problem.

Check the cam sensor (specs)

They may have already been bad.

Stop with the theory making and just check and see what codes are popping up.
Let me say I am a dumbass for refering to the coils as "wires". To be honest, none of my other VQ's ever had any engine problems. I changed the oil, plugs, filters, O2 sensors on my 01, but that was it.

No, I didnt spray my engine down, I just had a damp rag and wiped the engine cover, and the air intake. I made sure not to touch any wires or plugs.

I didnt check the 3 rear coils because it was already 11:30pm and I wouldve had to take off the manifold and collectors, which I didnt have time for. Plus, I didnt touch them in the first place, so I didnt think that was the problem.

The codes I pulled were
1- Multiple cylander misfire (pending)
2- Timing overadvanced (Bank 2 )
3- Camshaft sensor
4- Vacuum leak (Large)
*That was a cracked gas cap, which I replaced

But now, none of the codes are pending, and the idle is smooth. Is it possible that by me resetting the ECU that the computer is now compensating for the misfire? I thought that was a long shot because I dont think that if I was only producing power with 5 cylinders, that It would run as smooth as it does now at idle and under acceleration and highway speeds.

Never mind guys, (and gals ) Today my ses light turned itself off and the car runs great. Maybe it was the humidity when I did all this, because about 5 min after I plugged everything back in and went on my way, It started pouring like hell. Either that or it was the Magical Maxima Fairy who fixed it......

One thing that I've been wondering in my two weeks of driving is if there's any simple ways to improve gas mileage? It's an 02 with 55k on it and I'm thinking about doing the fuel filter fairly soon and any other suggestions?

Second thing is the in-cabin microfilter. I took out the factory and cleaned it for temporary use. Would you guys suggest getting another factory filter (non-rubber edges) or go for the 2 piece filter? Also what does it mean by carbon activated? I did a quick search and found nothing that explains that one.

It'll be a little easier if you have a 6-speed, just dont let the revs go above 2500 before you shift. I routienly go 45-50 in sixth and reset my trip computer, I get 31mpg (That's if it doesnt lie, which I think it does a little)
I dont know if the in-cabin microfilter would make a difference. But that is just my .02

Properly inflated tires, PCV valve, O2 sensors, clean air filter.

I just washed mine, per housecor's instructions: http://www.innerbean.com/housecor/cabin_filter.html

Well my filter is a little bit beyond the possibility of saving by a good cleaning. Anyone have any preference the straight up factory one or the two piece?

My kind warranty just replaced the 02 sensors which made a big difference. I'll go threw the other ones tommorow and see how they're looking.

But I agree with you, they are garbage. And blinding to oncoming drivers as well.

That's one hell of a price for it (high).

This might be one of the dumbest things I'm ever going to ask.
Do you think spraying cologne on it would affect the filters performance? lol

For those of us that like a certain smell during driving I'm wondering where I could spray to keep good flow of smell in the car to last the longest between sprays.

mine didn't come with one standard. All I've ever used is the 2-pc that I bought from Nissan.

Mine does that normally. Not sure if there is a mechanical issue at all I thought it was normal. My 96 did the same thing. I believe you can set it to either flash twice or beep, but I am unsure how.

That's true. Hold down the lock/unlock buttons on the fob for a few seconds to alternate between the 2. You can also roll up/down your windows by inserting your key into the door, and performing a turn & hold procedure. Where either direction either rolls them up or down. Try it and see.

Only for 02/03 models.
