About to buy my first Maxima, NEED HELP!

I have been looking for a car for the past few weeks, the three cars im looking at are the honda accord coupe 98-01, toyota solara v6 00-01, and nissan maxima 98+.
I recently found a 02 maxima se auto and went by today to look at it. Its got about 81,000 miles. I am wondering if this is going to be a safe buy with the high miles, and if so, what is a good price?

There are 2 big negative aspects though...

1. Its a new york car.... it just came to the south 2 months ago. That means horrible winters.

2. The owner replaced the transmission at 60k miles. He said that the warranty was ending, there was no problems with the car so he just decided to take advantage and replaced the tranny that had nothing wrong with it to be safe. Im pretty sure that the dealership only does warranty work if there is something exactly wrong?

Right now the price is $9,000. IS IT A GOOD BET?

APPRECIATE ALL THE HELP GUYS. and if anyone knows of any good maxima deals around North Carolina, let me know!!!!

$9000 sounds like a good price for that car, particularly if the tranny has been replaced (ask for documentation that it has).

You might also want to jump into the DC forum (which includes NC) and see if anyone knows of any good local deals...

yeah if it's rebuilt properly you are ok - get it inspected by a dealer or a good mechanic for sure.

like you I'm looking at a 2nd car, but i found out the 02 SE I'm looking at was a rental. looks like I'll be going w/ a 2000 Honda Accord EX V6 with 72000 miles, for $7500.

use autotrader to search, also for those looking at accord- the auto transmissions (and tl) on these years 98-02 were extremely weak. there are many bulletins about it- check honda-tech.

from my limited research, 5th gen maximas tend to be very reliable, which is good. that 3.5L V6 is one of teh best 6s ever built. it uses a timing chain not a belt so it's very quiet & smooth. as a whole car perhaps not as refined or smooth as an Accord, but it has the ooooomph.

biggest complaints seem to be GAS MILEAGE (do NOT believe the EPA # on teh sticker), but u gotta pay to play, u wont get 25-28mph with 255 HP. also, a lot of ppl diss on the rear suspension, and super wide turning circle.

make sure u buy a car w/ documented maintenance history. goodluck

if u like manual tranny's FIND A 6 SPEED! It may take time, but I guarantee it, its worth it. For the money, a used 6 Spd. Maxima is one hard deal to surpass, and is a blast to drive (granted, FWD, non-IRS, and tanker-like turning radius all suck, but like I said, "for the money"). Good luck!

If i find a 6 speed that has under 70K miles and is under 10,000 $ i will jump on it...but i dont even think that kind of deal exists?

The thing that worries me is this.
the maximas were always 100% japanese quality untill 2000 when nissan started making thier cars in america. The maxima isnt like it used to be,not in terms of power and style, but in terms of reliability. Please, im not trying to bash the car, infact im hoping that you guys will correct any misconceptions i have of the car....and hopefully, i might have me a nice max se ssoon!

ahem. Maxima was made in Japan until 2003. The Z continues to be made in Japan. Their quality did not change in 2000.
