01 grille question

I already customized my 01's grille. I kinda want something different, but it seems to be cast out of the same mold as the bumper. Stillen.com sells a billet grille that I like, but it looks like I,d have to cut out the old grille, and I don't know if the new one would fit well. Stillen said my grille should be held in with a few screws but the only screws I've found hold on the beauty ring. I think Stillen is wrong! Has anyone replaced their 01's grille and if you have any info please let me know.

on the 5.5 gen grill, the screws are in the back. You can only get to them easily by removing the entire bumper.

Okay when I cut it out, how does the aftermarket one stay in, and does it stay in tight or does it look trailer parkish?

Are you sure? This doesn't make sense to me. Mine has a crack in it and I never tried to take it out and fix it.

I'm sure he's right 'cuz I've tried to take mine out with no success.
And Metalmaxima, I'm assuming you posted the pic because you cut out your grille?

I don't think they have the joy of f**king with the POS grille/bumper set-up in an 01!

Here's a 00-01 bumper on ebay. As you can see the grille and bumper are one piece.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/00-01...QQcmdZViewItem

The Street Scenes recommends that you should cut out the grille but I opted to cover the OEM grille. Some people say I should cut it out but I like it this way. Also, the grille comes with metal clips to secure it in place.

Have you thought of removing your Nissan badge and putting it over the aftermarket grille. It would look tighter that way. When I get a little more computer savvy I'll post a pic of mine.

Yeah I got a lot of flak about that from my friends. Both grilles are off and will be repainted soon. When I reinstall the grilles the badge will be placed on the aftermarket grille.

No, it doesn't make any sense. I'm assuming the engineers went on a heavy bender prior to designing this part of the vehicle.

You mean this thread isn't about Maxima's in the woods? CRAP.

So, you cut out the grille. Good, now that i'm catching on, who makes the grille you used, and where did you find it???

Street Scenes makes the grille, it can be found on Stillen.com. Still one of the best cosmetic mods for the 5th gen IMHO.

HOW-TO Thread can be found HERE.

Good luck, lemme know if you have any questions.

Just looked at that grill on ebay. Is that the proper pricing for the whole bumper? I would have figured it to be more expensive.

I made a custom one that overlays the stock grille, out of expanded metal mesh (stucco lathe) and it looks rather pimp! I just suck at computers so I don't know how to post a pic. Look at your local builders supply, (home depot did not carry) It's gutter guard , but the diaminds are a little larger and it comes in a 2ft. x 8ft. piece for about $8. If you have to order over the phone, ask for non-dimpled. I'll write up my how to when I get a few more minutes.

I tried to do that and i had a hard time getting the cuts good enough and then i realized i didnt buy Stainless

I saw someone on cardomain who bought one of those sheets of the same stuff from autozone and cut it out to fit his car, it looked pretty good too.

Buy a pair of sheet metal shears. trace the grille on thin flexible cardboard then trace that to stiff cardboard. cut out the stiff card board zip tie it to the metal so they are stationary together and use sheet metal shears to cut out grille. the stuff they sell at autozone is only 7 inches tall, amaxima grille is 9in. tall.

Yes 00 and 01 bumpers are the same. Stillen sells a grille for the 00 & 01 but you still have to cut out the OEM grille. If you notice the grille for the 00 & 01 is more expensive than the 02+ grille.
