'00 SE - idle drops too low, sometimes kills engine

Any common causes? O2 sensors were replaced recently from 'service engine soon', but idle problem appeared before that. This commonly happens when foot released from gas on slow down, before turns, etc. Idle drops to 200 or lower, sometimes sputters and shuts engine. Odom just turned 70K, and always on premium gas. Is there a MAF or other sensor problem?

My friend has a 2000 gxe and has the same problem right now. 38000 miles. We took it to a shop they said it could be one of the ignition coils. Or the 02 sensor. or the injectors but you sould fell a power loss.

MAF

before i replaced mine, I wouldn put my car into neutral while driving and the cars RPMs would dip so low that sometimes it would stall while driving down the road. Replace the MAF first.

The MAF is one of my suspects. Anyone else, so that I can at least believe what the dealer finds (car being diagnosed today)? Need other opinions.

When I got my car at 72k if I was going in at any speed over 3 grand or so and pushed in the clutch it would just drop down to 0. Even a quick rev would make it drop.

The dealer replaced the maf and all was well.

I am about to purchase a 2000 GXE with 76k, and the seller said he had similar problems as you describe. He said the dealer replaced the maf as well.

Nice info. Thx. General consensus is the MAF, then. Is this part cleanable, adjustable, or straight replacement only? Any good sources other than the dealer?

The new part isn't that expensive 104.00 list. The only problem is that it is an updated mass and there is a reprograming that needs done to the ECM. This will most likely cost you an hours labor at the dealer, unless you can grab a tech outside the shop who would probably do it for 20 cash. Anyways good luck.

You have more than one of these? My car is headed to the dealer on Friday to get a verdict. I'm expecting the problem to be MAF
