Stuck In Park

Stuck In Park
I couldn't find anything on this on the site so I don't know if it is a common problem. I have a 2000 se Auto. Somtimes I cannot get the ****fter out of park. The button will not push in. I have to sometimes mess with it so that the shifter will regonize that I am pushing the brake and that I want to shift to reverse or Drive. If anyone could give me some Idea's I would apprciate it. Thanks

sounds like the neutral/safety switch. mine went bad in old altima and the only way to go anywhere was to put it in neutral then start the car and it shift fine. try putting it in neutral with the key in on position then crank the car. if it shifts fine then replace that switch. advance auto carries one made by gp sorensen for 78 bucks. if the shifter is just hard to get out of park then check the tranny oil level or use the parking brake no matter the incline.

My friend has an 03 Max that did that once and had to play around with the shifter lockout button to get it out of park, put it in neutral, and it started. Not sure about the 2000's but on the 03, there's a small removable plastic cover on the shifter console that reveals a shifter lockout button. Push down on it with a pen while trying to get it out of gear and it should release.

when you park, are you on a incline?
When most auto owners park, they put the shifter into P and then just let go. You'll notice the car will move back slightly if you are on a incline, putting the load onto the transmission. So if you try to shift out of that later, it will be stuck in P
next time try putting the shifter into N, pull the e-brake, let go of the brake pedal to let the car slide until the brakes stop it, and then put it into P
