6 speed Highway Drivers come in
Has anyone figured out the difference in MPG at various speeds?
I'm assuming the car is set up for optimal mileage at 65 or is it even 55?
Anyone figured out for 75 or 80?

@ 110 I get -26mpg
Really I've never been able to have enough patience to cruise at any particular speed and calculate my mpg. The on-board trip display is a piece.
For example: I was doing 80 last week for at least an hour on the expressway and messed with it, and it said my average speed was 26mph. I held it to reset and it said my ave speed was then 42mph......what a crock

Anyways, to answer the question on the original thread...i havent really been able to stay at a steady speed long enough to go through a full tank (ie: road trip) but my total mpg per tank has ranged from 25 to 36...i live in the hill country, so most of that driving is highway driving (mostly 60 mph)

I actually did this last spring as I have a 150 mile/day round trip drive to work, and 140 of those miles are highway speed with no stops or slowdowns. Sadly I found my best milage was at 65. I don't recall the numbers, but from there on up, it fell off pretty steadily. I posted a thread on it, I just can't find it now.

You guys are doing something right, or my car is just a natural guzzler. I've never exceeded around 24mpg cruising 79mph in 6th. This number is calculated by hand rather than using the computer which has been proven consistently very optimistic.

on a side note, whenever i DO drive rather..spriited i still havent ever gotten anything lower than 25 mpg (average for a whole tank) do you do a lot of city driving? cuz the only stop and go driving i do is for about 5 minutes each morning and evening, and the occasional stoplight out here in the middle of nowhere...

I'm with housecor.
I have no idea how you guys are getting the fuel mileage that you are. I get nothing near what you guys are getting. My car seems to get 12-13 litres per 100 kms (I am in Canada) in the city (and sometimes worse) and 10-11 litres per 100 kms for mixed city/highway driving. I believe that this works out to something like 18-20mpg in the city and 21-23 with mixed driving. If I feather the throtle on the highway, I ocasionally see 8 litres per 100 kms (or 29 mpg) - but I would never be able to average that kind of fuel economy (even on the highway).
Does anyone know if you can adjust the Canadian metric gauge to read mpg? I do not think in "l per 100 kms" terms.
I do have an auto - which I'm sure makes a difference.

Evan - Good to hear. Hey, what can I say, misery loves company. Although I do almost exclusively city driving and am very heavy footed. I typically drive my car like I stole it. I always run 92-93 octane and average 17 - 19 mpg city. It isn't cheap, but it sure is a good time rowing through the gears. I bought the 5th gen because it's near bullet proof and thus far it's proven to be so. Well worth the price of admission.
I assume some of you guys above are using the #'s generated from the computer. Those are far from accurate and typicallly well above the EPA rating.

Optimal for most cars I believe is around 50mph.
No way. Calculations are off somewhere. A 5th gen max is simply incapable of 36 mpg average speed unless you have a massive tailwind, you're going at 50, and you're being towed as well.

now 94 mpg on the other hand... haha, that trip computer doesnt know ****...if you were to reset it on a huge hill going 60+ mph in neutral, the computer will say that, but you still wont be getting that kind of mpg...even for that split second of going down the hill...

I take lengthy (300 mile) highway trips on a regular basis with my 2K2 6-spd and I track my gas mileage closely, both by hand on by the trip computer for every tank.
I can say with certainty that the trip computer is CONSISTENTLY between 4-6 mpg optimistic on mileage. So while it is not accurate, it is precise in that you do some quick math and it is a pretty good indication of how you are doing.
I will also say that I have varied speeds on these highway trips from cruising at 60 mph to cruising at close to 100 mph, and also at most speeds in between. Best mileage in this range is, without a doubt, at 60mph. Gas mileage slowly declines from about 60mph to 75mph, and then steeply declines from 75mph to 100 mph. I suspect that optimum mileage is somewhere in the neighborhood of 50mph although I have not confirmed this because I can't bring myself to drive that speed for any extended period of time.

Yea, that trip computer is garbage. For me, it is always at least 3mpg optimistic on every fill-up. Is it that hard to make an accurate trip computer?
My Grand Cherokee trip computer is almost exact every time i fill up. (I'm lucky to average 13-14mpg in that beast tho )

I get an 18mpg average per tank (almost exclusively city driving)... It fills up to ~16.3gal and goes for about 300 miles... On the highway i've seen it hit 36mpg but is typically reading between 20.4-21.2mpg...

I average around 19-20 mpg city and on a 150 mile trip this past weekend averaging 70 mph, I recorded 25.6 mpg. This is on 93 octane, Numbers are hand calculated, guess my car is just thirsty. It's hard for me to believe some of the numbers you guys are getting. I don't think my car is capable of around 30 mpg no matter how I drive.

"...I was quite surprised at the Maxima's good fuel consumption: with the 6-speed manual transmission, the Maxima offers up to 11.2 l/100 km (25 mpg) in the city and 7.7 l/100 km (37 mpg) on the highway. Equipped with the automatic transmission, fuel consumption increases a bit to 12.1 l/100 km (23 mpg) in the city, and 8.3 l/100 km (34 mpg) on the highway. "
Guys, there's got to be something wrong with our cars.
I am, just like Housecor, only get around 24 mpg on highway cruising at around 80 mph in sixth speed.
#23
yeah, i get less than 400 miles to about 15 gallons of fuel. i am going to have to do some manual calculation for the mpg. the trip says 27 mpg average. also my mpg increased by about 1.5 mpg when i stopped using AUTO for climate control, and use ECON now. not using the compressor saved me about 1-1.5 mpg.

Have you seen the other thread where the mpg dropped after changing tires?
I highly doubt that it could have made such big of a difference with properly inflated tires, i mean come on - it's a rolling resistance, we're not sliding on our tires...
but just out of curiosity what kinda tires are you rolling on?
I've got Michelin Pilot Sport A/S...

I dunno how some people get like 22-24mpg city mileage and like almost 30mpg all highway....
I remember filling up my tank...then taking a trip to my friends house which is 60 miles from me...cruising at aronud 75-80.....then coming back (120miles round trip) and the DTE still read 325. So I know my car can exceed 400 miles per tank easily since it's healthy. But I dunno how u guys get good CITY mileage....u guys have to be BSing or exaggerating....becuz I barely break 17mpg ALL city with trips less than 5 miles apart....lots of turning on&off the car which I know consumes gas alot.....
