2000 Nissan Maxima Transmission Problem

Subject: 2000 Nissan Maxima Transmission Problem 02/10/05 I own a 2000 Nissan Maxima w/an automatic transmission. It has ~90,000 miles and my problem is: When shifting between 2nd and 3rd, when the engine is cool, the engine will rev up 500 to 1000 rpm before it drops into 3rd gear. My wife took it to the Dealer, they replaced the transmission fluid, ran a diagnostic and found nothing wrong w/the transmission, took it for a test drive, and it ran fine (engine was warm then). Cost over $200.00. My wife took it to the Mall and when she was finished, by that time the engine was cold (Feb. Iowa weather), it had the same problem, over revving between 2nd and 3rd. Does anyone know what the trouble is? I would appreciate some suggestions. Thanks. T.P.C.

If they did the Flush ... it could be the selenoids..... check on that. I have the same problem but it doesn't bother me.. I just let the car warm up before I drive...

Take a look at Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) NTB00-039a

this service bulletin describes your problem (b.t.w. the latest revision is 39d but I didn't see it posted anywhere, the only difference is part numbers)

p.s. at the top of the 5th gen forum there is a TSB sticky thread that has other TSBs posted in it.

ECU does that on purpose to warm the engine and all the components up faster. Higher rpm=more heat. The engine works most efficeintly whenit is at a normal operation temperature. There is nothing to worry about. These cars are smarter than we think.

mine used to jump about 500 rpms between 2-3 till i had the solenoids replaced. now even when its cold it shifts normally. i dont think an extra few hundreds rpms for a second will help warm anything up.

Thanks for your help. Sounds logical. Do you perhaps remember the cost to

i had it replaced under goodwill, so nissan payed for it. my car was out of warranty. my dad is a mechanic for nissan and i helped the dealership out with some computer work. they did me a favor in return. I know it isnt cheap and it takes a few hours to do.

You'd be surprised with the difference that a few hundred rpms make...

I had that problem, changed the soleniods. Got rid off the problem 50% so then I changed the TCM (465$). Now the car shifts perfect every gear hot or cold.

This post is about a tranny that slips between 2nd and 3rd when it's cold and this guy posts this response?

That sounds like somthing the dealer would tell you when you go there to get it fixed.
