Rattling Cigarette Lighter Outlet? Try this.
I have an 03 SE, 6-speed. The front power outlet (cigarette lighter outlet) began “buzzing” shortly after I purchased it. During the time I’ve owned it, I’ve tried moving the plastic cover / plug in and out of the hole to make the rattling stop with mixed results. I was about to take it into the dealership to allow them the pleasure of fixing it but I don’t really like the idea of someone attempting to fix something that they may or may not be able to hear. Finally, this morning, I fixed the problem (so it seems). Here’s what I did:
Step 1) Shift into 6th or reverse (or probably 1st if auto) to allow room to work.
Step 2) Remove plastic cover / plug or cigarette lighter element.
Step 3) Insert thumb (wrapped in a cloth or bare) into the hole (don’t worry, you won’t get shocked). Make sure your thumb is tightly wedged into the hole.
Step 4) Turn thumb clock-wise (this will be turning the outlet as your thumb is acting like a screw driver) until the outlet stops moving. It may take a bit of pressure to get it moving but it will eventually start.
Step 5) Remove thumb (and cloth, if used).
Step 6) Reinsert plastic cover / plug or cigarette lighter element.
I haven’t heard the first rattle since doing this. I'm sure another "tool" other than your thumb would work (and probably better!) but that's all I had while I was driving down the road in the dark. I figure I can’t be the only one this is happening to so I hope it helps someone!
