tranny problems at high speeds 110+mph

I dont know what is happening to my car, but this has happened like 3 times already. When im driving at more than 110mph for more than 5min or so, it appears that the tranny overheats and what it does is that it will shift to 3 (auto) and stay in 3rd until the car cools down. while this is happening i can push the O/D off button and nothing happens (because is in 3rd). when this happened for the first time I stopped and a little smoke was coming from the engine compartment, then i continued to drive and it drove normal until it was time to shift into 4th which it did not do. No CEL or SES light came up or anything.

Please anyone knows what is this??????

what road are you on where you can drive 110+mph for 5 minutes straight?

flush your fluid and get an aftermarket trans cooler. and stop driving like a maniac.

since everyone is making moral judgements instead of addressing the issue i can only assume knowone knows about this.

this is a known problem as explained by my dealer who had it happen to his own vehcle. the computer that controls the tranny sometimes gets confused and keeps the car in 3rd even at lesser speeds even though you push the OD button. if you pull over and turn the car off then restart it should be ok. if not then call your dealer/mechanic.

the smoke is most likely an unrelated issue and you should check for leaks.

Dude an armadillo crawled between your trans and motor...It tried to get out when you started moving, but then saw how fast you were gowing it decided a hot roasty death was better than being roadkill.

seriously though, you see smoke coming from motor, pull over.

I could shut it off and turn it back on and stil the same it was until the car cools down that it stopped.
Thank you for your help.

I wasnt going for 5-10 min straight but justgoing fast for the time i could if there was incoming trafic I passed them and continued with the full acceleration until that happened. And theres plenty of roads you can do that here. On I-20 towards Stone mountain one time another one on i285 towards i85 and yes, I've gotten a ticket on Valdosta, GA at 107mph Cops donthave anything to do over there.

nothing better to do other than write tickets to people doing over 100mph, yeah they should be rescuing kitties from trees instead of pulling over idiots right

Many cars have computers in the trannys that shut down overdrive when the fluid gets too hot-thats whats happening here. You ned to cool down the fluid-get synthetic and/or a tranny cooler. Trany cooler is only like $50 and will extend the life of your tranny especially if you drive like this often. Heat kills trannys and yours will not last long if you keep this up. You also better change the fluid often.

Thank you kratz
I will get that cooler, I always put synthetic, but what do you mean in changing it often, what fluid the engine oil or the tranny one???
CauseI always change the engine one every 3,000.

Did the dealer say that it "shut down " 4th gear because of heat??? If so get a tranny cooler. Why a car would shut down 4th gear just cause it was going a higher speed makes no sense to me???? Imagine going down the road at 110 or so for a while the all of a sudden then car decides to shift and stay in 3rd gear... still doesn's make sense. I think the dealer is full of it.

i doesn't make sense that the tranny would shift to a lower gear if it were overheating. all that does is increase the rpms and put more stress/heat on the tranny. i guess it it could be related to overheating, but i'm thinking something more along the lines of a solenoid, sensor, or bad ecu instructions.

if the car functions fine under normal speeds then you're sol as far as the dealer is concerned.

School zone??? WTF are you talking about? I've never gone over 90 MPH anywhere. And to be completely honest, it's not because I think it's unsafe (which it is), but because I don't feel like getting jail time or losing my license if I get caught. You post crap like this on here, expect to get flamed about it.

I meant the transmission oil. Engine oil has nothing to do with it. You should change the tranny oil at 15-30,000mile intervals if you are going to heat up that fluid (towing/racing, etc...). Smell the fluid, if it smells burnt-you must change it.

Whatever man, im not gona start anything with you.
My point is that I think that the VQ30DE is a high performance engine that should withstand high speed for a long time. So I think theres something wrong with mine so if anybody has had this problem before and has resolved it then I would like to know so I can resolve it sa well.
Sorry if I offended you or anything!

Your tranny is going int safe mode, because it is not cooling. This is odd though, I have done the same thing (save it, I already know....its not safe blah blah blah.) but my tranny never knew the difference. I am willing to bet that your tranny cooler is clogged or blocked. OR your fluid level is low.

But are you supposed to have a cooler from stock, I thought that was only an aftermarket part????

Don't let them buig you about the speed. In IA there are areas where I go on my m/c at speeds of almost 200 mph and never go below 150 for miles at a time, sometimes on one wheel...).

6 speed motorcycle did those speeds.

Most Ive gone in my Maximas was 140+ in my 99 5 speed through rural South Dakota. Took a while to get there (miles). My 2k2 6 speed has more power but I drive it in a more urban area so I don't go that fast. I do occassionally go over 100 and did hit 125 ish once really quick. I prefer manuals b/c I have more control, they offer better performance, better mpg, are cheaper to buy and maintain...etc. The Maxima autos are good from what I hear but heat will roast even the best tranny. I always used synthetic in my motorcycle and raced it often. Did 200 miles on a track in one day and stripped all the tread off my tires - engine and tranny were perfectly fine.
