Roaring noise. Wheel bearings?

My 00 GXE with 83k miles is giving roaring noises from the front passenger side wheel lately.

The noise is there even if I put it in neutral and let it roll.
It is there when I lift the front wheels off the ground and let them spin.

It sounded like it is coming from the passenger side front wheel.
Is it the wheel bearings?

Has any one had problem with wheel bearings before?

If it is a bearing problem, can these be repacked or do I have to replace them?

Any estimate on the cost?

Thanks a bunch.

not sure on the cost but i had my passenger side went out right at 50k. the wheel bearings are not serviceable and should never require repacking. i thougth i was going to have to use my extended warranty but nissan covered it under powertrain til 60k miles. i had the symptons before it got real bad but luckily i did not destroy the hub driving as far as i did. there are quite a few people that have had problems with wheel bearings.

wheel bearings going bad happened to me at 34000 and at 59000. It was pretty obvious it was the wheel bearings, especially the second time around. They actually tried to blame it on my eibachs saying the suspension was to stiff and that the wheel bearing could not handle....needless to say that didnt go over well with me. they eventually gave in b/c they couldnt prove anything.

Hmmm, sounds like the same problem that I just posted a thread about. My '02 has 42K on it and just started happening.

Thanks all for the info!
And btw, mine is 5sp manual.

Sloppymax, you mentioned that you have the symptoms before it gone really bad. What were the symptoms? And when it went really bad, what happened?

This is what I have done to troubleshoot.
I tried shutting off the engine while the car is coasting downhill and the noise was still there.
I then lifted the front of the car off the ground and put it on stands.
Then I asked my brother to "drive" as usual and the noise was still there.
So it could not be tires. (Actually, tires were my first guess also.)
I actually crawled under the car while he was "driving" and pinpointed the source
to the front passenger side wheel.
At first I thought it could be a transmission problem, and hopefully it is not.

I checked the price of the wheel bearings online and it seems to be quite reasonable, ~$70 each.

i had a slight thumping noise on acceleration and right when i let off on deceleration. at idle, i had no noise. it would do it in a turn but only if i was accelerating or letting off. initially i thought it was a cv joint joint or somehow the shaft was bent but it was checked and wheel bearing was my culprit. it started off pretty quiet but right before i took it in, it was very loud.

yeah sounds like a wheel bearing to me..........after looking that far into have a little more faith in your diagnosis abilities, one other thing you could do is to check the play of the wheel while it is off the ground, alot of times when the bearings go bad they can get some freeplay in the hub. but if you asked me it definitely sounds like a wheel bearing.
