Scratching wheels or brakes

My front drivers side wheel is making a scratching/whistling noise when I'm driving, when I put my foot on the brakes, the noise goes away, when I let up off the brakes I hear the noise again, it sounds like something is scratching the rotor. Is it possible that my pads are wearing down, warped rotors, or something else? I run my fingers across the rotors and there are no grooves or ridges like something is scratching into them. I heard that our pads have like a prong that scratches the rotor to less us know when the pads have worn down too low, is this true? I order some new pads from DaveB to be on the safe side, is there something I should be looking into? Thanks for anyones help.

Brake pads are worn. Mine was coming from the back; I was puzzled with the noise until i replaced my pads & then it went away. Now, its coming from the front. Its embarrassing; I haven't had time to get them replaced.

So there are wear indicators on our pads. I ordered some new f/r pads from DaveB earlier, less than $90 for everything. I will order some brembo rotors from maxedup in another month or so. Thanks for the advice.

check the dust shield behind the rotors....there is not much clearance theere and if its slightly bent it will rub the back of the rotors and cause that noise....but it rubs lightly enough that it does not groove the rotors. bend it back slightly and see if it goes away.
