How To For GAB?

Hi, is there anyplace I can find a write to do the GAB mod? I would like to do this since there have been god reviews about this "mod". If not can someone make a write and put it in one of the stickies up top like the how to section?

Thanks

This is my write-up on it. This will keep you from destroying the filter holder

96max5sp,
just PMed you back. you can also use Fezzik's method. my mentality is that even with a piece cut out of mine, it looks stock to most people. so if i sell it, they wont know the diffirence.

i've been running this setup for about 2 months and have been very pleased. as long as you use the thick gauge wire you can shape the wire well enough that it will securely hold the filter in place. i've tugged on mine and doesn't budge. one of the best things is when i took the car in for the 30k service i just put the stock filter holder right back in just to avoid any questions and warranty threats.

low end torque is slightly off and this setup is definitely not for show, but the convenience and overall improvement in performace makes this mod well worth the cost.

Hey BP_3.5. Glad you like it. That's the whole reason I did that. I sat there and thought. How can i do this and be able to put it back to stock when needed.

Name brand intake... ~300 dollars
GAB... ~ 5 cents...

or, Injen knock-off from ebay... ~$45.

i tried several variations of the GAB as well as the OSCAI and ran with them many times. personally, i think the extra $44.95 for the generic Injen (based on your .05 cost of the GAB) is well worth the money.

also, if you do the GAB or OSCAI you should for sure consider investing in a K&N or similar filter - which jacks your .05 cost up anohter $45. that essentially makes the knock-off Injen intake a better buy! not to mention it looks better and isn't ghetto.

just my .02!

I wouldn't recommend using anything other than an OEM style paper filter. Oiled cotton and foam filters both let in a LOT more dirt than the paper filter. Just something to consider. The mod I did resulted in only a very slight drop in low end torque, barely noticable, kept the engine quiet and added quite a bit up top. I still use an OEM paper filter which was a priority for me. Good luck whatever you choose to do.

Holy bump thread day batman......

Just hack the top dude, and take 2" hole saws and drill a couple holes in the face of the box.

Now go outside, and look at your box. Then look at this picture and make it look the same.

No more GAB thread bumps from you today.

that looks pretty crappy. id just drill holed at the top end, and gut the resonator.

You're absolutely right. It does look like s'hit. That was to give him an idea. That was also about 3 years ago. It's since been cleaned up (top and holes) since.

Does it matter?

It’s the big black plastic box in between the TB (Throttle Body) & MAF (Mass Air Flow sensor). It is connected to the TB by an accordion-like 'tube'. It has a PCV line (rubber) running from it (resonator box) to the front VC (valve cover).

It's uses Helmholtz type of resonation physics, and provides the best, most linear power curve.

The GAB mod does not require to cut anything alctually.

i thought the "resonator" was the clear plastic part that connects the the bottom of the stock airbox (my 00 GLE had one but my 02 SE doesnt...so it is a 00-01 thing? or a GLE thing?)

If you use the coat hanger method than you're right.

I couldn't say if it's better or not, but the idea is to open up the box more to make it as less restrictive as possible. With the snorkel off it's definately less restrictive so in a way you can say it's better.

The Helmholtz resonator is what is what I was referring to. I am using an 01 box in my 03 right now. I did not receive the ducting, only the box, so, technically, the airbox is the same (01 & 03).
