When I first put my springs on when visiting my parents in jacksonville, my step dad bought a compressor at Discount Auto Parts for $25. Later, when I needed to take 'em apart to get rid of my clicking/grinding noise I bought a craftsmen set from Sears. They were much nicer. I don't remember how much I paid.

Well, the one pepboys had was pretty crappy and I ended up buying one of a different design from another store for about $30. The rentals are normally worn and hard to use. In my case, the pepboys one would start to experience a lot of internal friction as you compressed the spring. So much so that I would say almost 90% of the work being put in was going to just overcome the device friction, not to compress the spring. The one I bought was well worth the money IMO since it was much easier to compress.
