are the 2k2-2k3 auto trannys troublesome?

im pretty new to maximas. so far i hear a lot of complaints about the 6spd grinding, notchiness, etc. but as compared to the auto tranny of the 3.5's, how does it compare to the 6spd in terms of reliability and giving problems and such? i don't hear too many compaints about the auto trannys....or am i missing the threads?

In one year of owning my 03 SE auto, I have absolutely no problems. The car is wonderful. It is fast, comfortable and stylish. It is an all around great car. Every car has its quirks, that is unavoidable, but I don't think I've heard of any issues yet with 02-03 autos. I don't think I even remember hearing about any major issues with 5th gen auto trannies.

More people would complain than complement, so the low response to your thread is a good sign.

I also have not had problems with my auto tranny. I only have 11k miles on my Max and the tranny's been great so far.

I've got 35k miles on my 03 auto, and have had no problems. Shifts smoothly and trouble-free.

Get it serviced every 30k miles and it'll last forever

Finally, a thread about the auto Max.

Do you find that the Max tends to upshift way too early sometimes?
Is it programmed that way to conserve fuel? I'm not talking about WOT driving...but more normal everyday driving.

Sometimes it seems my Max barely makes it to 2-3k rpms and then upshifts.

No problems here either. Drive fairly normally, but do my fair share of quick starts too. It shifts right about when I want it to normally... no complaints at all!

No problem with my 03 GLE tranny either. My only complaint is the slight hesitation from a full stop acceleration, which I do not know is tranny related. Anyway, I heard there is a TSB fix and a ECU reset fix for this. My Max recenlty celebrated its first birthday with 5,350 trouble free miles.

Put 85K on my 01. Had a well known tranny shop service it at 30k and 60k putting in Mobil 1 ea time, said the filter and magnets were very clean both times. And 20k on my 03 just putting in Mobil 1. There cars have good trannys.

Anybody else notice that the cars seem to get + 1-1&1/2 better MPG with the Mobile 1 ATF?

Wouldn't mind having it programmed a little different.

Anyone ever notice that the 2k2 max shifts funny in stop and go traffic?
Sometimes I get the feeling that it jsut gets stuck in 1st or 2nd gear until it finally upshifts in a not-so-smooth action.
Or even when im cruising at 55mph on the highway, I will let off the gas if I want to slow down and coast, but when I want to accelerate again, the car shudders for half a sec before the gear engages and accleration begins again.
Im wondering if this is a tranny fluid problem. I have had my ATF fluid flushed twice in its 33k mile lifetime, but I guess I should have saved my money and gone the synth ATF route.
Or what if it's my lack of a real tranny fluid cooler...
Maybe I need to have the tranny pan dropped, cleaned, and metal shavings removed...

You people wouldnt happen to know any TSB's about this would you?

Oh, other than that the tranny rules. I cant wait for the tranny warranty to go down so I can do the VB mod at max tuning in long island.

This is the only time i feel that jerk, but hardly since i tend to leave the shifter at 3 in bad stop/go traffic. The transmission seems to stay longer in 1 and 2nd.

Sust,
What you describe sounds like the torque converter locking and unlocking.
It is there for better MPG on the highway.
It is totally normal to feel this on the Max.

They auto tranny on the 02/03 are great considering they are 4 spd autos, mine shifts great IMO. The only thing I dont like is when the electronic throttle gets confussed sometimes. The 00/01 had a few issues with their trannies but the beefing up of the tranny Nissan did to handle the extra power is noticeable IMO vs my old 01 and 97.

Wow, so even if coasting at 65 and then lightly accelerating back up to 70 again, it is natural to feel that?
I guess what troubles me is that it happens sometimes and others it will be fairly smooth.
I am actually up in NYC right now and I had a very ample amount of time from 12A to 4A on NJ turnpike to get a better feel of my tranny quibbles.
When I first started my car and began driving, there were no detectable shifting problems. Typically, I baby the car and accelerate at a grandma pace and brake at a very gradual rate and ample distance.
While on I95, Ive found that if I am coasting, I need to very lightly touch the throttle so that whatever mechanism re-engages will kick in, and then I can depress the throttle further and begin accelerating again.
Man, NJ turnpike last nite was a nightmare. Some fool dropped his payload all over the turnpike around exit 9 before it splits into tractor trailer and car lanes. Thus they closed off the right lanes and left only the fast lane open. Naturally, traffic slowed to a crawl and I tried putting the auto in "3" mode which happened to solve my tranny's rough shifting in stop and go traffic.
Props to soundmike on this one

Just finished doing mine. It is about 3 1/2 to four quarts if you are just draining the ATF. I have been draining it every time I change my oil (twice so far) and will do it two more times to make sure I get the old stuff out. I've been user Mobil 1 ATF. Just my two cents.

51K with VB from Jeffs and tranny cooler

I have the same amount of miles but did the tranny service through Nissan with the VB in place at 32k. There is no way for the dealer to know that this was done to your tranny just from looks. If they drive it then maybe there lazy techs may notice the hard shifts but on mine I had the level one which I did to extend the life of this tranny. I do close to 100 miles a day plus many more on the weekends. In traffic it thumps hard at times, especially in stop and go. But so far so good. The car really pops in gear when you step on it. I'm close to the second service so this time I may use the Mobil 1 stf instead of nissans fluid. On the board here people have said that Nissan fluids are good also.
