O2 sensor change...do it yourself or no???

Just blew my O2 sensor on the right engine bank (that is the one towards the rear, correct?). Is this a do it yourself job or should I go to a mechanic? What are the in's and out's of the swap.
Nissan wants $50+ for the job.

If you can install a catback, you can do O2 sensors.

50 sounds real cheap. that sounds more like their cost for the part. when i worked at advance, they had the O2 sensor for my car and they were 225 a piece and were bosch. im sure they are much cheaper than that, but 50 might cover the cost of a Walker O2 sensor. has anyone purchased or had their O2 sensor replaced from nissan outside of warranty?

My AE is well out of warranty (V2). today I
had my car diagnosed for a SEL---$89
they told me $140 for ONE new oem O2 sensor.
If I was to have them change it on the spot it would have been ~$150 just for labor ($89 of that was for diagnosis) Why do these things go bad by the way? Someone on the org is selling me one oem piece for $75 shipped (sounds too good to be true but hopefully I can trust him) How do I disconnect/reconnect the wires without damage? These are so damn expensive. I de-installed and reinstalled my V2 but don't know how to change O2 sensors...yet. Thanks all!

Easy to install an 02 sensor. Just be careful removing it so you dont strip the threads in the exhaust pipe (happened to me). I bought my O2 sensor for $65 from Jockos-it was a Bosch.

Easy to install? It looks like you need to thread the wire all the way up to the top part of the engine where the other end plugs in....or is it that there is a mid point that the wires connect so you don't have to run it all the way up top?

I was quoted 150 for the part and 125 to put it in....275 plus tax? Are you kidding me?

When I screwed my exhaust up b/c I stripped teh thread, I took it to Midas. They asked me to buy and bring in my O2 sensor so they knew the size of the nut to put a new one in my exhaust. The labor to weld in the new nut was like $40 and they charged me $10 to install the O2 sensor. Was going to do it myself but for $10-they can do it. Like I said the O2 should cost far less than $100. If you're not confident enough to do it. Buy it and have a shop install it for like $25-30.

Is there other alternatives to the dealer in changing O2 sensors? Does Midas, pep boys etc do it for considerably less $$?

How do you know if you blow an 02 sensor.

When your SES light comes on(Service Engine Soon)

I've been driving around with mine on for about 15K.....I've noticed a little bit drop in mileage but nothing other than that. I was told that I can't harm the engine, just that I'll have crappier gas mileage(dropped about 3-4mpg)

Apparently the sensor that went on me isnt that critical...I just dont have 275 ballons to blow to get it fixed(well I do but other things come first )

SES light can mean several things. Many people run current through the sensor to test it themselves. My gas mileage dropped and the engine boggs like crazy when I give heavy throttle. I would imagine any muffler shop if very capable of the swap. The car goes into a "safe" mode and dumps EXTRA fuel in to prevent detonation, hence the poor mileage.

But how do you know for a fact that it's the 02 sensor?? the SES light could be anything though.

true but 99.9% of the time it will be because of an o2 sensor on a Maxima

you take it to autozone and get the code pulled for free.

I went to Autozone, they pulled a code that said I was running rich...not that an O2 sensor was bad. But it adds up to the same thing. Anyone know the EXACT method to change O2 sensors yet in a maxima?
