13 tweaks you probably didn't know about!

This info was originally from altimas.net member, but it works on maxima model as well!

After reading a couple of threads about adjusting the sensitivity of the automatic on/off feature for my Xenons, I decided to pay a visit to my dealer. Well, it turns out that once the car is hooked up to the dealer’s diagnostic computer, they can change several other settings at the same time.

These settings are not listed in the owner’s manual, or even in the books the repair guys use. Here are the settings you can change and the appropriate modes:

Door Lock/Unlock (with single click on keyfob)
Mode 1: Unlock left front door only
Mode 2: Unlock all doors

Anti-lock Out (prevents locking keys in car)
Mode 1: Master door lock switch can activate door locks w/ key in ignition
Mode 2: Master door lock switch cannot activate door locks w/ key in ignition

Dome Lamp Timer
Mode 1: Interior lamp comes on when left front door is unlocked
Mode 2: Interior lamp does not come on when left front door is unlocked

Retained Power (Amount of time windows and sunroof will operate after turning off ignition)
Mode 1: 45 seconds
Mode 2: No delay (Will not operate after ignition key is turned off)
Mode 3: 2 minutes

Auto Light On (headlights turn on as it gets dark)
Mode 1: Factory setting
Mode 2: Lights come on sooner than factory setting
Mode 3: Lights come on later than factor setting
Mode 4: Lights come on later than Mode 3

Head Lamp Battery Saver (applies when headlights left in “on” position, not in “auto.”
Mode 1: Shuts lamps off after 5 minutes
Mode 2: No time delay (headlights turn off immediately)

Headlamp Illumination delay (time headlights remain on after exiting car when headlight is in the “auto” position)
Mode 1: 45 seconds
Mode 2: No Delay (lights turn off immediately)
Mode 3: 30 Seconds
Mode 4: 1 minute
Mode 5: 1 ˝ minutes
Mode 6: 2 minutes
Mode 7: 2 ˝ minutes
Mode 8: 3 minutes

Hazard and Horn Reminder Mode (key fob allows you to choose between modes 1 & 2, but there are 4 others)
Mode 1 (C Mode): Lock = 2 flash, 1 horn /// Unlock = 1 flash, 0 horn
Mode 2 (S Mode): Lock = 2 flash, 0 horn /// Unlock = 0 flash, 0 horn
Mode 3: Lock = 0 flash, 0 horn /// Unlock = 0 flash, 0 horn
Mode 4: Lock = 2 flash, 0 horn /// Unlock = 1 flash, 0 horn
Mode 5: Lock = 2 flash, 1 horn /// Unlock = 0 flash, 0 horn
Mode 6: Lock = 0 flash, 1 horn /// Unlock = 1 flash, 0 horn

Remote Auto Locking Function Mode (Doors automatically lock after exiting car)
Mode 1: 5 minute delay
Mode 2: Function disabled
Mode 3: 1 minute delay

Remote Panic Alarm Operation Mode (activates when button on keyfob held for approx. __)
Mode 1: .5 seconds
Mode 2: Function disabled
Mode 3: 1.5 seconds

Remote Trunk Open Operation Mode (activates when button on keyfob held for approx. __)
Mode 1: .5 seconds
Mode 2: Function disabled
Mode 3: 1.5 seconds

Remote Power Window Down Operation Mode (activates when button on keyfob held for approx. __)
Mode 1: 3 seconds
Mode 2: Function disabled
Mode 3: 5 seconds

This info was actually already presented by Soundmike, of course it did originate from Altimas.net. I'm going into the dealer to see what they say about it.

Unless the ECU is capable of this and just needs to be tweaked...don't write it off until somebody does some tests.

My headlights seem to come on way too quick causing my HIDs to flash too often! I wonder if the dealers know about these tweaks?

And all this can only be changed through an OBD II utility or the dealer.

How do I go about getting those changed? I know some you can, like silent mode for locking the car. But the others you listed have to be done by the dealer?? How did this person find all this out? interesting stuff. if it's there why can't we change it?

Since the info is from altima, I gave it a try on my new ride, the manager checked with the technical people and accepted my request which means it's applicable on maxima too.

so does anyone have a 2001 that can do this. Does this mean that they changed the ECU between 2001 and 2002?
that suxs that it does it back in 95 but not in 2001, going backwards with technology,

listen to me be bitter, grrr

I just got back from dropping my car off for the transverse link recall and I asked the dealer about making 2 programming changes. They didn't know anything about it either, but wanted to charge me an hour for something that would probably take 5 minutes.

I spoke with my service manager at my local Nissan dealer, and he said that this is not possible (I have a 2k2), well I should say that he said it was only possible with an aftermarket part for the ECU. Has anyone here actually had any of the mods done yet, and if so what state did you get them done in.

Thanks,
Scott

Thanks! Does "Lights come on later than factory setting" mean the system waits until it's actually darker (i.e. less light), or waits longer after it decides it's dark enough (i.e. same darkness level, but longer delay until it kicks on the lights - this would help with underpasses etc.)?

I guess it just has longer delay to turn on the headlight since the sensor stays the same. Unless you can change the sensitivity of the sensor, then you might able to make it auto-on when it gets darker.

to Scott:
My service manager told me it's possible after he went to the technician. and he mentioned if the battery die, I'll need to re-program it(just like resetting the ECU) with $75 service fee. I'll let you know if I have it done.

Please Do, I really want to do this, but I need to find someone who has actually had it done, so I can say to the dealer, hey it can be done.

I think its an eeprom write so the changes should be retained even if the battery dies......manager may be talking out his south mouth..

That's great info. I did make my alarm arm/disarm silent. The horn honking is annoying. If you have a 2002 or 2003, simply push the lock and unlock buttons on the keyfob at the same time and hold them down for about 3 seconds. The parking lights will flash 3 times to let you know the change has taken effect.

What they are saying is that you can make it silent w/o the lights coming on ever when you arm/disarm the alarm.

Mode 3: Lock = 0 flash, 0 horn /// Unlock = 0 flash, 0 horn

If it helps, I talked to the service manager who said "haven't heard of that - let me talk to the technician", then came back and said "yep, shouldn't be a problem". He's checking on the Auto light mode for me (i.e. darker or longer [wasn't that a XXX movie...? ]), and then he said it would be about $37 for 30 min. labor. Once he gets back to me I'm going to decide whether to bother doing it (if it's just a longer delay, not sure it's worth it...). I'll let you know if I go ahead.

Right, my '95 had it too. According to my sales guy, who thus far has been frighteningly well-informed, they skipped the feature with the 2k and 2k1 models, then brought it back for 2k2 (and 2k3 - lucky me). Sorry...

If you guys want to change the setting for the alarm system, take your key fob press the lock and unlock buttons at the same time for about 10 to 15 seconds. The car will cycle to the next mode.

I don't think anyone ever had any of this done, because I think it was discovered that most of it does not apply to the maxima. NO ONE ever said they HAD it done, just that their service would do it. I think it's stuck the way it is.

All these items can be changed on the Max, however on most of the items you need the consult II to do it.

You don't wnat to buy one. It isn't like they are 100 or 200 bucks, I believe they are more along the lines of 4000 bucks. Just find a Nissan Dealer that will let you hook up to them.

I believe you can advacne the timing too.
