high mileage maxima

what kind of mileage does everyone have on their maximas? in july, 2001, i drove a dark green maxima at work. it was a 96 maxima. the odometer said 252,896. has anyone come close to that in a six year old car?

My White 96 Maxima SE was purchased new in November of 1995.

It now has 179,000 miles on it.

I've replaced the starter and a couple of EGR parts in the engine compartment, had outer CV boots installed, but everything else is original.

Original engine, trans, water pump, alternator, exhaust system.

Many people that see my car are amazed that it has 179,000 miles on it.

I spend a lot of time taking care of it.

I put new front brake pads on it today, rotated the tires, and used Meguiar's rubber and vinyl treatment on all of the inner fender wells, all CV boots, and rubber exhaust hangers and hoses on the underside of the car. Also treated both sides of my Michelin Energy MVX Plus Tires with Rubber and Vinyl Treatment.

Also removed the mud flaps and waxed the paint underneath them and reinstalled them.

I love my Maxima! It is a great car!

Wow great milege reports I have a 95 SE purchased new that just turned 110,000 I have just replaced the rotors on all wheels and have replaced a starter and oil sending unit, the rest is just regular maintenance. Oh had to have the Bose AM/FM/CD/CASS head unit retooled for $135.00 from Factory Car Stereo Repair in Longwood, Fl sounds like brand new

Seriously.... these cars can go 250k EASY. This engine IS one of the best V6s EVER made. It's smooth, quiet, fuel efficient and very reliable. I drove a few 4th gens at work with 160k + and they felt as good as my 98 GXE with just 65k miles now... This is almost 100k miles more and they felt just as good. There are a bunch of people with 3rd gens with 200k miles + and going strong, still modding, 3rd gens had a few problems, like auto trannys, VTCs on 92-94 SEs (VE engines) and something else... but other then that they were good... looks like they fixed tweaked it all up for the 4th gens. They are great cars, and are a steal for the $ they cost.. you get a roomy family sedan with enough ***** to give sports cars a run for their $ and **** all over the rice boys in their "modded" Accords and Civics

I just changed my spark plugs today and finished my tune up, the old plugs were in awesome shape, looked NEW, my car is so freaking quiet now, i'm scared. The engine runs awesome. I never heard of people blowing a VQ, unless they are running some crazy mods and do something that's really not supposed to be done and no car would survive.

If you change oil on time, do basic maintenance, expect nothing short of 250k miles out of these cars and more...

I've got a 97 SE that I bought new. I just turned 222,000 miles on it. I replaced the auto trans at 205,000 and both CV joints then as well. Also have new brake rotors and pads. I run Mobile 1 in the engine and trans. It's been a great and reliable car. I don't think I'll have trouble getting 300K out of this car.

Actually, I remember some guy came here a little while ago saying that he's looking at a 95 Max with 350k + miles

I also have a pic on my other computer of the dash showing 396k miles.. but it's from a 3rd gen Max.. still running.

96 Maxima

I have a 1996 Maxima with around 129,000 miles on it. The only things tah t have been replaced was the starter and CV joints. I am getting a check engine light so I'll either be replacing a O2 sensor or a knock sensor

mileage

I have a 1995 Maxima with 114,000 km, and i have a 90 Maxima with 307,000 km. Everything is stock on the 95 except for rear struts. Everything on the 90 is stock, has studs cracked in the manifold though.

Re: 96 Maxima

O2 sensor: I'm told there are three. I had one replaced and then hurried back to the nearest dealership 2 weeks later when another one went out.

My experiences are similar to other folks in terms of the starter - cv boots (caught before the cvs got too exposed)

Yeah, you can get a lot of mileage out of the max's. Mine has been a fantastic car for a work car. I'm sad to say though that I fear this will be my last max. I will keep it for an around the town car, but for my highway work car I don't think I'll get another max. If they discount the 02's this summer I might break down, but I can't see spending 30K+ on a loaded max. I would love to get another max, but I think my next car will be an E430.

My Max is a 1995 SE. I have 160,000 miles on it. I bought the car used with 103,000. The only parts that I've had to replace besides regular maintenance is the transmission at 110,000 miles, the starter, the cv joints and rotors. I have always heard good things about our engines. Change the oil often (I do it every 3,000 miles) and you will really get a lot of life out of your car.

Hi Gang!! those milage numbers are really great. I always suspected such...we have a terrifically engineered vehicle...high reliability. My 96 has 55K.....at some of the milage numbers you guys are getting I can consider my 96 a toddler thats just starting to walk and still has diapers on.....what a future I have to look forward to.

124,000 on 95 GLE bought new 9/94. car runs great, but i have replaced several items: starter, cv joints/axles, all four rotors, both rear window regulators, radio antennae assembly, bose head rebuilt, rear O2 sensor (twice). i also just replaced stock suspension with H&R's and AGX's with all new strut/shock components - the car now handles great.

95 SE

Bought mine a year and half ago with 75,000. I've run it up to 112,000 and I've only had to replace struts all around. Orginal everything: engine, clutch (maybe new one soon), tranny, etc. and still running like a champ. The guy that had it before me said it was the best car he's ever had, I totally agree.

I surely dont belong in the high mileage club. my car is a 97 and only has 38K miles. Compared to others who have posted in this thread, it seems like i have had problems with the most things considering my mileage. so far, i've had replaced the egr valve, bpt valve, knock sensor, pcv valve...and am waiting on replacement of some or all engine mounts, possibly tranny mount(s), and IACV valve. Dont know why, maybe i have a "friday" car? and i thought i was doing good by having the factory brakes on there still...the other guy has over 100K and STILL has them! wow!

Where have your higway miles taken you? - I've put on around 96k since '99 between Nashville, Tampa, NYC, DC, and some Midwest and West Coast trips. Mountain interstates are so nice in the Max, especially coming from my '87 Sentra background

Forgot to mention I had to do rear springs and shocks just after 120k since I keep a lot of equipment in the back seat and trunk during travels.

I'm quite impressed with the alternator especially ))

I have a 1995 Maxima that I bought brand new in July of 1994. I'm pushing 114,000+ miles as of right now. Only major problems are that I had my timing chain replaced along with the tensioners before I hit 36,000 miles. Luckily, this was covered under warranty. Very expensive to replace, too. I heard that these are very common on the 4th generation Maximas. Overtime, they tend to make a "noise" because the way the chain is made. I believe they changed the shape of the links on the 5th generation Maximas for a more quieter ride.

I have a '97 w/ 76k, the only thing I've done is replace the tranny bearings, which was ridiculous, a manuf. defect, but this was a while ago, and I'm over it now. Other than that my car is virtually bulletproof in terms of reliability. I plan on driving it until the wheels fall off.

My 98 has 130K Miles

One major issue:tranny bearings went at 120K. Even though the bearings were bad, the clutch was still good at 120K miles, replaced it anyway since it was open heart surgery on the tranny.

Otherwise, minor stuff, replaced front rotors, replaced brake pads etc. Got a emissions check engine bug with the purge control valve, but since it was before 3 years and 50K miles, Nissan covered that.

Otherwise, this ride is awesome. Despite all that has happened above, the car has never completely broken down on me at all. The tranny bearing were just noisy and the yellow CEL was a nuisance.

Enjoy the ride

Me too But this thread has made me feel alot better about putting 30,000 miles on my car in the past year, but that is with alot of 200+ mile trips to ATL, and a 6 hour run to SC and back, I thought i had high miles for a 97 now I don't feel so bad

My 95 SE auto has 107,000 miles. Bought it in 1997 as a Certified Nissan with 32,000 miles.

I provide religious maintenance to the car and use synthetic/blend oil with a Purolator One filter. I change drive belts and hoses every 40,000 miles (to be safe), plugs at 50,000, and coolant every other summer. I do not abuse the car. I've made the usual repairs/replacements associated with this vehicle - 02 Sensors, struts, break pads, starter, rotors, front strut tower bushings, strut boots and CV boots.

The maxima is just a machine and like all machines, certain parts are prone to wear out over time. Recently, I discovered a rear valve cover gasket leak. Frankly, I was suprised the maxima developed this problem. I wish I discovered it earlier. When a petrolium based product gets on rubber parts it causes the rubber parts to erode. Engine oil has unfortunastely leaked onto the lower right control arm bushing causing it to deteriorate. Unfortunately, you can't just buy the bushing from Nissan but have to get the entire control arm assembly. Thought I'd replace the power steering hose as well since its been deluged with oil as well. I also had to replace a window regulator at 95,000 and am on my second replacement starter. I'm also dissapointed by the leather covered steering wheel used in the 95-96 SE models. They tend to peel with time. Also, the Maxima may develop rack and pinion problems for those who like to rip around town, engage in high speed maneuvers and toss the car into corners.

So far the transmission, AC, and cooling system has been problem-free.
The 9004 headligh system is the weakest link in this car. Better bulbs do help improve the extremely dim halogen lighting, but this problem is inherent to the 9004 bulb. Unfortunately Nissan chose to use this lighting system in the 4th generation Maxima. The only true fix at $400 is to go with HID ballasts.

All in all, these cars are capable of 250,000-300,000 miles for someone who properly maintains the car. Personally, I think a 95-96 Maxima, with 85,000-120,000 miles, is perhaps the "best" used car available for someone needing a reliable, performance oriented, japanese import sedan, having between $4,500 and $6,500 to spend on his first or second car. There are some real steals out there from older owners who simply want to get rid of the car thinking it will die the moment the speedometer hits 100,000 miles.

Don't hesitate to seek one out, make the necessary mods, (strut tower brace, rear sway bar, CAI, AGX's, dust free break pads, sound insulation, HID's, lowering springs, performance tires, spoiler, 16-17" rims, exhaust) and enjoy the ride.

My next car is likely to be a second car (a boy-toy, MR2 Spyder roadster with 17" rims or maybe the 350zx.) I'll keep the Maxima garaged for those times when I need a family sedan. Here in South Florida, we aren't concerned with rust, so this car will ultimately take it's place as "Nissan Ninja" (Fast, light and agile) among my "to be acquired" collection of automotive greats.

I have 145K miles and it runs as new with the orignal spark plugs, replaced rotors, replaced starter, replaced CV joint and boot, and replaced speakers. The car gives many a scary for a 6 almost 7 year old car that can blow there doors off there 02' cars. Since the 4th gen came out, i've only seen one on the side of the road. This guy looked like a total idiot anyway so I felt bad for the car.

1996 SE 5spd w/136K mi

Bought with 104K mi. It didn't have it's 60K service done until 119K.
The paint isn't in the greatest shape and it's keyed on the driver's side, but so far so good!

Except for stuff covered under recall, I had a problem with the exhaust (about a $250 fix), a problem with the sunroof (all labor, some ice got inside), and now it's drinking up oil to the tune of about 1qt/2Kmi. It looks like piston rings are detereorating and it seems a wee bit sluggish. I have to make a decision about living with the oil thirst or something more drastic

I just traded my 1995 GXE in and it had 240,000km. The only repair other than oil changes, axle boots, brakes, tires and a battery, was the fan/air conditioner switch.

I previously had a 1987 SE and traded that one at 237,000km. I put a new starter, alternator, plus maintenance items like axle boots, timing belt, oil changes, brakes, and battery.
