I would like to know if any of you have had a negative experience involving GL5 gear lube, or know somebody who has, and also the context of the failure. No rants or blanket statements, please, I can search for those easily enough if I wanted.

I had gl5 in my max for a short while. Shifting was terrible, did not like going into gear.

as in GL-5 in a transmission with brass in it? i knew a guy that put GL-5 in his Hardbody and it just fecked his synchros, started grinding after a few months and i think he ended up just getting a new transmission

GL-5 has sulfur in it, sulfur eats brass synchros in old transmissions. so the failure is going to be grinding or getting locked into a gear, if you accidentally put GL-5 in a trans needing GL-4 i would change it out ASAP and then change it again in maybe a month. when i learned transmission rebuilding i was told that once GL-5 graces the trans the damage is about done but you might be able to save it by changing to GL-4 ASAP

asand1, did the GL5 that you used have LSD friction additive in it?

My first Maxima, a 95 model 5-speed, had trouble shifting into 3rd at lower speeds. Sometimes I would need to "double clutch" to shift without applying a lot of force to the shifter. That Max had ~145,000 miles on it when I purchased it. I soon had to replace the CV Joints and Axles. When I removed the axle seals I could see the transmission lube needed changing. The car didn't receive good care, so I could only imagine the type of gear lube that had been used over the years. I quickly changed the gear lube to a GL4 from Napa. I could tell the GL4 helped the shifting problem. Though I think the synchronizers caught some damage from the unknown gear lube that could not be completely reversed.

The current 99 Max 5-speed has a smooth shifting transmission. Soon after I bought it I replaced the gear lube with Redline MT-90. I could tell a difference as the MT-90 made shifts just a little smoother. Our member Talkinghorse is selling AMSOIL GL4 in the Group Buys section that I've read is good for our car's manual transmissions.

If you are looking to keep your 4DSC shifting smooth, I would stick with a GL4.

gl5 is too "slippery" for the synchronizers of transmissions spec'd for GL4 generally. it causes the synchronizers to not synchronize properly, leading to grinding unless you take steps (meaning modification of synchros, synchro cones, etc) to alleviate this.

gl5 is also bad for yellow metals, but it won't eat them away like acid as some people envision. perhaps after years and years and years, but you will just wear out the synchros from what i described in my first paragraph before you actually chemically damage the synchros.

we sometimes recommended GL5 in certain GL4 spec transmissions at the race transmission shop i used to work at because GL5 is MUUUUUCH better at protecting gears and bearings than GL4 is.
